Canary Islands carrier Binter has been revealed as the mystery customer behind this week's Embraer E195-E2 order. The $390 million jet order will see five more modern jets arrive through 2024. Let's take a closer look at this agreement below.

E195-E2 mystery customer revealed

As Simple Flying reported earlier this week, a mystery customer placed an order for five Embraer E195-E2s, with Embraer at the time only mentioning an "undisclosed customer". Only a few days later, the mystery airline has been revealed as none other than Binter Canarias. The carrier is already an operator of the Embraer E195-E2 and will double the size of its E2 fleet with this order.

In fact, Binter was the first European carrier to induct the E195-E2 into its fleet after welcoming its first jet on December 3rd, 2019, followed by two more E2s in quick succession within the same month. The airline has since added another two E195-E2s to its fleet in March 2021 and June 2021, taking it to five in total.

The first two jets are scheduled for delivery in November 2023, with the final aircraft to arrive in April 2024 - this would take Binter to 10 E195-E2s overall. Embraer added that the list price of the agreement is worth $389.4 million, which will be added to Embraer’s Q4 backlog.

The E2 is in demand

Embraer's next-generation E2 jets are attracting more attention as the company targets broader global markets - as Simple Flying reported in August, Embraer's order backlog is larger than ever and includes over 160 E195-E2s. According to the Brazilian manufacturer, the E195-E2 can offer operators "double-digit lower fuel consumption compared to current-generation E-Jets."

As reported by AirDataNews, Binter General Coordinator Santiago Guerra said,

"The experience acquired in these years confirms the excellent evaluation that our customers have of this aircraft model, which fits very well on Binter’s longer routes and with a greater volume of passengers, and the arrival of new jets will allow us to expand the offer of routes and destinations that we have now."

The Embraer E2 family includes the E195-E2, along with the E190-E2 and E175-E2. The E195-E2 variant is the most-operated E2 jet at 40 active aircraft, followed by the E190-E2 at 17 - the smaller E175-E2 is scheduled to enter service in 2023. Binter Canarias has configured its E195-E2 jets with 132 seats, which is 24 fewer seats than the jet's maximum capacity.

The carrier is set to offer its largest-ever schedule next summer with over 650,000 seats available on 45 routes to 10 countries, a 12% increase from this summer and triple its 2021 capacity. Binter enjoyed an excellent summer this year after hitting the 500,000-passenger mark - at its peak in Summer 2023, the carrier will operate around 220 flights per week.
