Okay, British Airways gets a bad rap quite a lot, especially from points and miles chasers. However, the airline does come with a fair amount of award flight options, as its distance-based award chart allows you to fly for free on flights that could cost you a pretty penny otherwise.
The British Airways Executive Club sweet spots are pretty valuable. Here are five that may work well for you.
1. West Coast to Hawaii
It’s one of the most popular ways that points and miles chasers redeem their points and miles — on that oh-so-coveted flight from the West Coast to Hawaii (if you live in the United States, that is). Often, for U.S. travelers, getting to Hawaii can cost about as much as a flight to Asia, so getting there for free is a pretty big deal. You can book economy award flights from British Airways on American Airlines or Alaska Airlines, for as little as 12,500 Avios each way.
2. Low-Cost Europe and Asia Awards
You can book a 4,500 Avios award flight when you book with a Oneworld partner, when flying within a certain geographic region, such as Europe or Asia. It’s recommended that you start out at a Oneworld hub airport and then see where those 4,500 Avios will take you, whether it’s just across the country, or across an entire continent.
3. East Coast to Ireland
With Avios partner Aer Lingus, you can fly between the East Coast and several Irish cities, with trans-Atlantic flights starting at just 13,000 Avios. Routes that can take advantage of these low redemption rates include Hartford, New York, Toronto, D.C. and Chicago to Dublin.
4. West Coast to Asia
If you have a mere 100,000 Avios lying around, you can fly Japan Airlines first class (an extremely stylish option) between the West Coast (either San Francisco or Los Angeles) and Tokyo. Coming up with the 100,000 Avios is relatively easy when you consider you can transfer points to British Airways from Chase Ultimate Rewards and American Express Membership Rewards.
5. Regional Routes on Qatar Airways
If you want to take a regional route through Asia or South America, you can do so on Qatar Airways for as little as 4,500 Avios. Oddly enough, on these short-haul flights, if you book the right flight and aircraft, you can get a lie-flat seat, if you book in business class (which isn’t that much more than the initial 4,500 — just 9,000 Avios).
