This week, the Mexican flag carrier Aeromexico received its 50th Boeing 737 MAX, a MAX 9 registration N867AM. The airline will heavily add new narrowbody next-generation jets this year, as it aims to become one of the companies with the largest active MAX fleet globally by the end of the year.

More MAXs are coming

Following Aeromexico’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy process, the airline is looking to expand heavily. This week, the carrier made two significant announcements. First, it surprised everyone by introducing the rebranding of its Club Premier loyalty program, which will be called Aeromexico Rewards as of next month. Then, Andres Conesa, the company’s Chief Executive Officer, announced the arrival of the 50th Boeing 737 MAX.

“I’m proud to share with you the arrival of our Boeing 737 MAX number 50, a MAX 9. We are the fourth airline worldwide with the largest 737 MAX fleet, which is also one of the most modern and eco-friendly planes.”

He added that Aeromexico expects to add five additional MAX jetliners in 2023. The company will finish with a fleet of 55 Boeing 737 MAX. “Our compromise is clear: we will continue to elevate towards an extraordinary experience with the best talent and service onboard.”

As of March 2023, Aeromexico’s fleet is composed of 152 aircraft. This is the largest fleet it has ever had in its history. According to data from ch-aviation, the company operates five Boeing 737-700s, 33 MAX 8s, 36 737-800s, 17 MAX 9s, eight 787 Dreamliner 8s, 11 Dreamliner 9s, and 42 Embraer E190s (flying with the Aeromexico Connect brand).

The airline also expects to close the year with 20 787 Dreamliners, adding one additional widebody this year.

One of the largest MAX fleets globally

Aeromexico has invested in its fleet in the last couple of years. The airline is now one of the largest Boeing 737 MAX operators globally. Andrés Conesa said Aeromexico has the fourth largest MAX fleet in the world, we reviewed the ch-aviation database to find which carriers had more.

Southwest Airlines still has the largest MAX fleet globally, operating 164 Boeing 737 MAX 8s. It is followed by United Airlines with 98 and Aeromexico with 50. Here’s a table of the first nine MAX operators globally:

Airline 737 MAX 8 737 MAX 9 Total
Southwest Airlines 164 0 164
United Airlines 43 55 98
Ryanair 96 (B737-8-200) 0 96
Aeromexico 33 17 50
flydubai 44 3 47
Alaska Airlines 0 43 43
American Airlines 42 0 42
Air Canada 40 0 40
GOL Linhas Aéreas 38 0 38

As Boeing delivers more and more MAXs to clients globally, Aeromexico will fall down in this ranking. The Mexican carrier is set to receive only eight additional MAX 9s, according to ch-aviation. Meanwhile, many airlines still have major unfilled orders for MAX planes, including United Airlines (422), Southwest Airlines (383), Lion Air (230), and VietJet Air (200).

Last year we did a flight review onboard one of Aeroméxico’s Boeing 737 MAX 8 flying between Mexico City and Lima International.
