The Mexican carrier Aeromexico has decided to increase its long-haul connectivity to Madrid Barajas International Airport (MAD). Aeromexico will add new capacity this winter season on its routes from Guadalajara International Airport (GDL) and Monterrey International Airport (MTY).
New capacity
Last year, Aeromexico announced it would launch two new routes to Madrid, not departing from Mexico City. For the first time in over a decade, Aeromexico launched a long-haul route to Europe from a different airport than Mexico City Benito Juárez International (MEX). Throughout this year, the carrier has operated three services per week from Guadalajara and Monterrey to the Spanish capital employing its Boeing 787 fleet.
On Friday, Aeromexico announced it will increase the number of weekly frequencies on both routes during the winter season. It will operate five weekly flights on both routes (up from three), starting on December 12 and up to January 15, 2023. Therefore, the Guadalajara–Madrid route will be operated on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays; the Monterrey–Madrid route will be served on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
Increasing connectivity
With the new frequencies, Aeromexico's offer to connect with Spain in the winter season will be more than 62,000 seats through more than 240 flights operating from Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey. This represents a 45% increase in capacity to meet the demand of its customers who wish to connect with Europe during the upcoming high season. Aeromexico also flies to Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS), Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG), and London Heathrow (LHR). In the past, it also flew briefly to Barcelona (BCN), but there’s no guarantee that route will be served again in the future.

The routes from Guadalajara and Monterrey were inaugurated in December 2021 and were added to the existing offer from Mexico City. Since then, Aeromexico has transported more than 290,000 passengers between Mexico and the Spanish capital through more than 2,600 takeoffs and landings. Pasquale Speranza, Regional Sales Director Europe, and Asia, said:
“This increase in frequencies, in a season as important as winter, represents greater flight alternatives for our passengers. We are proud to be able to offer the highest number of frequencies between Spain and Mexico, with 24 direct flights per week, positioning us as the airline with the most travel options between Europe and Mexico, with 47 each week.”
Aeromexico currently has 18 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, including eight from the -8 version and ten from the -9 version. These jets have a capacity for 243 and 274 passengers, respectively, in a three-class configuration.
Contested battle vs. Iberia
Earlier this week, Iberia announced it would increase its number of flights between Madrid and Mexico City this winter. The airline will operate 21 weekly flights between both cities, the most in any of the long-haul routes operated by Iberia. Moreover, Iberia has recently signed up for a codeshare agreement with ultra-low-cost carrier Viva Aerobus.
Meanwhile, Aeromexico has strong ties to other SkyTeam members, such as Air France, KLM, and Air Europa; these three carriers operate flights from three of Aeromexico’s four destinations in Europe.
