Today, Air Canada shared that it is ramping up its safety measures by offering flexible rebooking options to passengers with economy class tickets if their flights are close to being full. Moreover, the airline is introducing new touchless processes at airports, along with enhancing its inflight service and provisions.
According to a press release seen by Simple Flying, from tomorrow, the flag carrier of Canada will replace its policy of guaranteeing adjacent seats in economic class seats are empty with a new process. If the aircraft is close to capacity, affected customers will receive notification emails, and there will be announcements at the departure gate.
Subsequently, these passengers will have the option to change to another flight that is operating within three days. Alternatively, they could hop on the next available service without extra charge.
Moreover, to reduce points of contact amid the pandemic, Air Canada has already introduced touchless bag check on all domestic flights from Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, and Calgary airports. Now, the company is expanding this feature to more airports across Canada and for international departures.
The operator is looking to implement even more hygiene measures at Canadian airports. At the end of next month, it will introduce virtual queuing at its hubs across the country.
If travelers need assistance from a ground agent scan, they can scan their boarding cards to enter a virtual queue. When the member of staff is ready, the passenger will be notified by a message on their phone.
Also, from the start of next month, the carrier will resume meal service designed by some of Canada’s most celebrated chefs in Air Canada Signature Class. Additionally, it will introduce chef-designed meals in its North American business class.
Customers traveling on international flights in economy class will be treated to an enhanced meal service. Furthermore, there will be a reintroduction of North American economy inflight meals if the trip is longer than two hours. However, this service is only available on pre-order. Nonetheless, passengers will be able to choose from a selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.
Alongside these measures, Air Canada is providing care kits to its customers. Each kit includes a mask, antibacterial wipes, hand sanitizer, gloves, water bottle, headphones, and a snack. Also, pillows and blankets will be offered again on all international flights. However, they will be wrapped and sealed when presented.

Andrew Yiu, Air Canada’s product vice president, spoke about the measures that are in place. He emphasized the importance of his company being transparent with its customers.
“As we rebuild our schedule, we are continually increasing the range of products and services available to safely and efficiently enhance our customers’ travel experience. As of July 1, we will be transparent about flights booked close to capacity in Economy Class and will provide rebooking options for customers booked on such flights,” Yiu said, as per the press release.
“In addition, we are introducing industry-leading, streamlined, touchless airport processes such as TouchFree Bag Check and virtual queuing, and will be resuming meals designed by our Canadian chef culinary panel.”
The businessman added that his firm will continue to assess new safety initiatives to further build on the multi-layered approach that its CleanCare+ program features. Ultimately, he wants to give passengers confidence in a safe, secure, and enhanced travel experience.
Altogether, with flight activity slowly picking up again across Canada, airlines need to ensure that the right procedures in place when it comes to safety. Ultimately, Air Canada is balancing its measures across its operations at every point of the customer journey.
