India’s flag carrier is slowly showing that London Stansted can be a gateway to the world. Last year, the airline launched the airport’s second current long haul flight. Now, the airport, which is home too low-cost carrier Ryanair, has two long haul carriers flying to three destinations. This will increase even further when El Al returns to the airport for the first time in over a decade later this year.

Air India’s second Stansted route

The arrival of a Boeing 787 Dreamliner yesterday indicated the start of a new beginning for flights between Mumbai and London. The route to London Stansted becomes the second operated by Air India to the London low-cost hub. Last year Air India also launched flights from Amritsar to London Stansted using the Boeing 787.

The service between Mumbai and London Stansted will operate three times per week. A Boeing 787 will depart from Mumbai for the service on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. According to Air India’s booking engine, it will operate to the following schedule:

  • AI 133 will depart from Mumbai (BOM) at 10:20 on the days listed above. Following a 9-hour 10-minute flight, it will arrive at London Stansted Airport (STN) at 14:00.
  • AI 132 will then depart from London Stansted Airport at 15:30. Following an 8-hour 50-minute, the Boeing 787 will touch back down in Mumbai at 05:50 the next day.

Commenting on the arrival of London Stansted’s third long-haul flight, the airport’s Cheif Commerical Officer Aboudy Nasser said:

“The launch of Air India’s new service to Mumbai is a fantastic addition to London Stansted’s route network and a real vote of confidence in the airport… we expect this service to be very popular with passengers as we continue to build our successful and growing relationship with Air India at London Stansted.”

London Stansted’s 3rd long haul destination

The arrival of Air India’s second service at London Stansted Airport shows an increasing belief that the airport can cater to both long and short-haul flights. Low-cost carrier Primera Air was operating from the airport prior to its collapse.

Since then, Emirates was operating the airport’s only long-haul service with a double daily Boeing 777 rotation from Dubai. This was joined by three times per week Air India Boeing 787 service around four months ago. Finally, to add to the mix, El Al will be launching Boeing 737 flights to the London Airport later this year. These will compliment Arkia’s seasonal service on the route.
