Companion passes and companion fares are one of the most highly coveted airline perks out there. After all, flying is expensive, so if you can bring someone along for free or near-free, it’s a deal you’ll hardly want to pass up. So, which airlines and credit cards offer this benefit?
1. Southwest Airlines
Southwest Airlines has probably the most notable and widely covered companion pass, and for good reason. It’s great and it’s not that difficult to obtain, and it’s really the only true companion pass that lets someone fly with you for free, repeatedly.
All you have to do is earn 110,000 points or make 100 one-way flights within a year, and then you get the pass to use for the year you earn it in and the following calendar year. Take a look at this article to see how you can use the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit Card to earn your companion pass quickly.
2. British Airways
The British Airways Visa Signature® Credit Card allows you to earn a Travel Together ticket. In order to do so, you have to spend $30,000 on your card within a calendar year. The downside to this companion pass is that, while it can be redeemed for a second seat for no additional points for two years, you do still have to pay British Airways’ somewhat exorbitant fees and surcharges, which sometimes cost as much as the flight itself.
Delta offers its SkyMiles Companion Certificate, which gives you a companion pass that allows one person to fly free on eligible round-trip domestic flights. You will pay taxes and fees up to $75. You can earn one certificate each year if you have the Delta Reserve credit card from American Express.
4. Alaska Airlines
Alaska Airlines is known for its companion fare, which allows you to purchase a round-trip economy ticket for little to nothing. However, you only receive one companion fare on your account anniversary and you have to have an Alaska Airlines Visa Signature, Alaska Airlines Visa Business, World Elite MasterCard or Platinum Plus MasterCard.
Which companion fare or pass is right for you? The Southwest Airlines pass via the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit Card is honestly the easiest to earn and most beneficial in the long-term. However, if you don’t fly Southwest often or live in an area serviced by Southwest, look into one of the airlines that gives you a companion pass on your account anniversary, like Alaska or Delta.
