Bermuda's L.F. Wade International Airport is set to see a significant increase in services from United States carriers this summer. Last week, JetBlue announced that it would return to Bermuda and launch a new route from New York's LaGuardia Airport. United Airlines has also announced that it will launch services to BDA in March.

From the United States to BDA

According to United leadership, the airline will launch its flights from Newark-Liberty International Airport to BDA in March, six weeks earlier than planned. According to schedule data from Cirium, United will launch its daily flights on March 26. The flight from EWR to BDA will be on United's Boeing 737-800 aircraft, with a capacity for 166 passengers.

JetBlue will resume flights to BDA from BOS and JFK and launch service from LGA in May. Daily operation will commence on all three routes on May 5, and JetBlue will deploy its Airbus A320s and Airbus A220-300s to BDA.

"We're thrilled to resume United Airlines service and welcome JetBlue's expanded service to Bermuda in 2023. It's a signal that as our sales and marketing efforts continue to make headway, tourism in Bermuda continues to move in the right direction." – Erin Smith, Chief Operations Officer, Bermuda Tourism Authority

American Airlines and Delta Air Lines already serve BDA from multiple hubs and will not increase their operations before May. Delta Air Lines has flights to BDA from its hubs at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) and JFK, with both routes served by A319s.

American flies to BDA from Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), Miami International Airport (MIA), and Philadelphia International Airport (PHL). The Dallas-based carrier deploys multiple aircraft on the various routes to BDA, including its Airbus A319s, Boeing 737-800s, and Boeing 737 MAX 8s.

The addition of flights from JetBlue and United and the resumption of JetBlue's previous routes significantly benefit the Bermuda economy. This month, there are 97 flights scheduled to BDA from the United States, less than half of the peak number of 280 flights scheduled in July.

Below is the breakdown of flights from the US to BDA from January through August:

January – 97

February – 106

March – 129

April – 177

May – 267

June – 270

July – 280

August – 278

Additional services from Canada and Europe

Though American carriers make up the majority of flights to BDA, other carriers serve the popular Caribbean destination. From Canada, both WestJet and Air Canada fly to BDA from Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ). Air Canada currently deploys its A319s and A321s, but beginning in March, it will only use its A319s to BDA. WestJet uses a combination of aircraft, the Boeing 737-700 and -800, and in January, there is one scheduled flight on a 737 MAX 8.

British Airways and Azores Airlines also fly to BDA, with BA deploying its Boeing 777s and Azores deploying its Airbus A321neos. From January to March, BA's service to BDA is between five-six times weekly, with daily services beginning in April. Azores Airlines will resume service from Ponta Delgada to BDA in June, with two monthly flights through August.
