Alaska Airlines has announced three new routes from San Diego International Airport (SAN). Flights to Eugene Airport (EUG) and Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) will begin on June 15th, with services to Tampa International Airport (TPA) set to commence on October 4th.

The new additions bring the total number of destinations in Alaska Airlines’ network from San Diego to 35. While the oneworld member will not face any competition on the San Diego-Tampa route, it will go head-to-head with United Airlines on flights to Washington DC and with both Allegiant Air and Southwest Airlines on flights to Eugene.

Alaska Airlines’ regional vice president of California, Neil Thwaites, celebrated the news, saying,

"Our guests in San Diego asked for more nonstops to the East Coast, and we're excited to add service to both the nation's capital and to Florida's vibrant Gulf Coast. With convenient daytime schedules, award-winning service and a premium product offering, guests will arrive refreshed and ready-to-go."

The addition of the new routes was equally well-received at San Diego International Airport, with the president and CEO of the county’s Regional Airport Authority, Kimberly Becker, saying,

"The announcement of new destinations on Alaska Airlines is a great way to start the year. Our community benefits from the addition of flights to the East Coast and Pacific Northwest. We thank Alaska Airlines for the addition of these routes and their continued partnership at SAN."

Ongoing expansion in California

Alaska Airlines continues to rebound from the pandemic – the carrier recently announced record financial results for last year, with annual revenue 10% higher than the level seen in 2019.

With two hubs (Los Angeles and San Francisco) and two focus cities (San Diego and San Jose), Alaska Airlines’ presence in California has never been larger. At peak times, the carrier operates over 330 flights per day to, from, and within the state.
