It’s been just over a week since American Airlines resumed Boeing 737 MAX flights from Miami to New York. We knew that the airline intended to increase its 737 MAX services in the days that followed, but just how many is the airline flying? Simple Flying dug through the data from FlightRadar24.com to find out.
Throughout most of 2020, the Boeing 737 MAX carried no passengers due to a grounding following two fatal crashes. In November, the Federal Aviation Administration approved the type’s return to service. While American Airlines was the first FAA sanctioned airline to resume flights with the type, several non-US airlines resumed flights before the US carrier.

Six aircraft are flying
According to data from Planespotters.net, American Airlines has so far taken delivery of 34 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. Of these, 18% have so far been activated. Data from FlightRadar24.com shows that six aircraft are now operating passenger flights for the airline,
- N314RH – 2 years old
- N316RK – 2 years old
- N316SE – 1 year old
- N318SF – 1 year old
- N323SG – 1 year old
- N324RN – 2 years old
Since being returned to service, not every aircraft has been flying every day. Indeed, in the first week of operations, relatively few aircraft flew. However, now that we are moving into the second week of 737 MAX operations, American Airlines is starting to ramp the schedule up.
The graph above shows how many 737 MAX flights were operated by American Airlines each day since the type’s return to service. Each block equates to one flight. For example, on December 31st, N314RH and N316RK each operated one flight, while N324RN operated two.
As you can see from the graph, American Airlines reached a high in operations yesterday with eight flights from four aircraft. Today, based on flight schedules from FlightRadar24.com, the airline should operate seven flights with just two aircraft.
On the aircraft’s return to service, an American Airlines spokesperson told Simple Flying,
“Bookings on the MAX are comparable to other aircraft, and we aren’t seeing data to suggest customers don’t want to fly the aircraft.”
Where is the MAX flying with American?
Initially, American Airlines served just one route once a day with the Boeing 737 MAX. This was flight AA718 between Miami (MIA) and New York’s LaGuardia (LGA). Two services on the route prompted the spike on December 31st.
As of yesterday, the airline has begun adding Boeing 737 MAX routes. These include routes from Miami to Washington and Orlando. Over the coming days, the airline should also start flying the 737 MAX from Miami to Boston and San Juan. These new routes are accompanied by an increase in 737 MAX frequencies between Miami and LaGuardia.
Throughout January, American Airlines expects to relaunch even more services with the type. Eventually, it currently aims to reach 36 daily departures from Miami using the MAX. This will likely be accompanied by an increase in aircraft operating flights for the airline.
