Avelo Airlines, the 18-month-old United States-based airline, is inaugurating two new routes to Orlando International Airport (MCO) from Lansing, Michigan's Capital Region International Airport (LAN) and Kalamazoo / Battle Creek International Airport (AZO). In the words of Avelo Airlines Chairman and CEO Andrew Levy, the routes will make "Getting to The Sunshine State more affordable and easier than ever."

New Routes for a New Airline

Avelo Airlines' new routes connecting Michigan's Lansing and Kalamazoo with Orlando, Florida, are part of a business strategy. As Levy explained to Simple Flying earlier this year;

Fundamentally what we're trying to do is find opportunities in the market where we can offer a differentiated product. And usually what that means, and in every case, actually, what it has meant and I think will continue is, is unique city pairs, or unique airport pairs at a minimum. So we'd like to fly where others aren't, and we'd like to give customers more choice in the marketplace.

In statements announcing the new routes, Avelo pointed out that the airline is "flying unserved routes to primarily underserved communities" where "a small hometown airport" is at the end of each route. Such is the case with Michigan's Capital Region International Airport and Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport. Both airports usually do not get Boeing 737 service.

The airports' leaders are ecstatic at the thought of getting Boeing 737 flights out of their airports. Capital Region Airport Authority (CRAA) President and CEO Nicole Noll-Williams, in an airline statement, said,

“We are so pleased to officially kick off our new nonstop service from LAN to Orlando with Avelo Airlines’ inaugural flight tonight, and to welcome Avelo Airlines Chairman and CEO Andrew Levy to our community to celebrate this occasion. The response from the community has already been tremendous, but now it’s important to keep that momentum going. Supporting local air travel and demonstrating to our airline partners that Lansing is a strong and vibrant market will create more travel opportunities for all of us.”

For Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport Director Craig Williams said,

“Southwest Michiganders love traveling to Florida, and this nonstop service to Orlando is going to be very popular with our passengers. Avelo’s ultra-low fare pricing model makes a great vacation to the sun fun and affordable.”

Furthermore, Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin welcomed this with open arms. She shared that the move is fantastic news for Mid-Michiganders who head south to Florida during spring break. It is also great for those visiting relatives or who want some summer sun.

Avelo provides a unique service

For Avelo, cheap fares and reasonable checked luggage fees, seat preference, and more make this possible. Also, in its statements announcing the route, Avelo claimed,

"A year-to-date flight cancellation rate of 1% and an industry-leading year-to-date checked bag handling performance of 1.9 mishandled bags per 1,000 checked bags."
