The Boulder, Colorado-based company that is in the process of building the world's fastest airliner, Boom Supersonic, has reached a partnership with Tuscon, Arizona-based Dimensional Energy. Dimensional Energy is a company that produces carbon-neutral fuels and products by recycling carbon dioxide. The partnership will see sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) acquired for Boom's aircraft.

A partnership for SAF

The two companies have come to an agreement that will allow Boom Supersonic to purchase up to five million galls of sustainable aviation fuel per year during Overture's flight test program. Overture is Boom Supersonic's proposed supersonic airliner, currently planned to enter service in 2029. It will fly at Mach 1.7 with a range of over 4,000 nautical miles, and its first flight is forecast to be in 2026.

The agreement that Boom Supersonic has reached with Dimensional Energy shows a continuous effort toward making supersonic flight sustainable. The President and Chief Business Officer of Boom Supersonic, Kathy Savitt, spoke about making sustainable supersonic flight possible. She said,

"At Boom, we believe sustainable aviation fuel will be essential to the transformation of air travel. Our new collaboration with Dimensional Energy represents another important step to making sustainable supersonic flight a reality for millions of passengers in the coming years."

Dimensional Energy is a key partner in the sustainable flight industry, as it is considered a leader in power to liquid SAF technology. The company's existing production methods allow it to produce net-zero carbon SAF from carbon dioxide that has been recycled. The company has shown to be a significant force in the SAF industry and has also worked with major United States-based airlines.

In 2022, United Airlines announced a purchase of 30 million gallons of SAF from the company over the next 20 years. The Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of Dimensional Energy, Jason Salfi, spoke about the company's goal of creating sustainable flight. He stated,

"Boom and Dimensional Energy share a vision for the future of sustainable aviation. Overture has the potential to completely transform how we experience the world, and we are excited to play a critical role in its net-zero flight test program and beyond."

Boom Supersonic's goal toward sustainable flight

The partnership with Dimensional Energy is another step in Boom Supersonic's goal of engineering sustainable supersonic flight. Besides the agreement with Dimensional Energy for five million gallons of SAF annually, Boom has secured other partnerships with companies currently producing SAF. The company has purchased and received over 10 million gallons of SAF to date.

Boom Supersonic, as a company, also intends to become net-zero carbon by 2025. It has made significant progress towards this since the goal was released through the company's 2021 Environmental Sustainability Report. By the end of 2021, Boom reported that it had achieved carbon neutrality as a company, thanks to a variety of carbon reduction initiatives as well as high-quality carbon credits throughout the year.
