Breeze Airways has revealed its next airport: Orange County. This shouldn't be surprising given it was recently awarded slots there. Two routes will lift off in February: Provo and Orlando International. The latter is especially exciting given Orange County's renowned short runway, at just 5,700 feet (1,737 meters), although it'll 'only' be the California airport's fourth-longest route.

Breeze adds Orange County

Provo and Orlando to Orange County will begin on February 16th, each served 1x daily using A220-300s. They'll use Provo-based equipment with the following routing. Passengers can 'BreezeThru' from Provo-Orlando, although it has a three-quarter greater distance than what a nonstop from Salt Lake City would be.

  • Provo to Orange County: MX602, 07:30-08:15 (1h 45m block time)
  • Orange County to Orlando: MX602, 08:50-16:30 (4h 40m)
  • Orlando to Orange County: MX603, 17:10-19:30 (5h 20m)
  • Orange County to Provo: MX603, 20:05-22:45 (1h 40m)

Breeze will face Allegiant on Provo-Orange County. Allegiant, which started the route in February 2021, has 6x weekly flights. The airport pair will now have 2x daily services except on Tuesday (1x). In contrast, Orange County has never had an Orlando route – in fact, no service to Florida at all, at least not in the past 32 years.

Orange County-Orlando: a new route

Booking data shows that, between January and August 2022, 53,000 passengers flew via a hub between Orange County and Orlando. It had 106 passengers daily each way (PDEW) and was Orange County's largest underserved market. It means that Orlando International will now have 99 and not 98 domestic routes this winter.

If the same period in 2019 is examined, Orlando had 56,000 (116 PDEW). It is hardly surprising that it attracted Breeze.

Returning to January-August 2022, 188,000 people traveled via a hub between Orange County and Florida (781 PDEW). Tampa was the next largest market (34,000), followed by Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Jacksonville, and Fort Myers. If Breeze secures the third-daily slot it seeks at Orange County, might it launch Tampa?
