British Airways has revealed that it aims to complete its Club Suite rollout on the Boeing 777 family by the end of 2022. The change will mean that the majority of the airline's widebody aircraft will come with the cabin equipped by the end of the year, a considerable upgrade for passengers able to fly in the business class cabin.

Before launching its Club Suite product, British Airways got its fair share of criticism for how out of date its business class product was. The 2-4-2 business configuration found on its planes may have been top of the range when introduced. However, as times changed, it became dated.

Roll out progress

British Airways has a sizeable fleet of Boeing 777 aircraft. According to ch-aviation.com, this currently consists of 43 Boeing 777-200(ER) aircraft and another 16 Boeing 777-300(ER) jets. According to information from the FlyerTalk Forum, 26 aircraft have already received the new Club Suite cabin. These have three different layouts as follows,

  • 14x 777-200(ER), 8 First, 49 Club Suite, 40 World Traveller Plus, 138 World Traveller
  • 7x 777-200(ER), 48 Club Suite, 40 World Traveller Plus, 184 World Traveller
  • 5x 777-300(ER) 8 First, 76 Club Suite, 40 World Traveller Plus, 132 World Traveller

Interestingly, it is only the five 777-300(ER)s that are also equipped with the airline's new suite-style first class cabin. Today, British Airways revealed that it is on track to finish its Boeing 777 upgrade program by the end of 2022. This puts the airline roughly on track with its rollout plan issued in late 2019. Collins Aerospace is handling the refit.

Is the Club Suite rollout delayed?

In 2022, the airline was due to start making significant progress with its Club Suite rollout. Many Boeing 787-10 aircraft were built into this plan, and even the Boeing 777-9. We know that the 777-9 won't play into the program on time, given that Boeing has delayed the first delivery to any airline until 2023.

The airline is also behind where it had hoped to be when it comes to 787-10 deliveries. Of a total order of 12 aircraft, the airline has so far received just two. According to the airline's owners in 2019, the airline had hoped to have all but four of its 787-10 aircraft by the end of 2021.

Commenting on the rollout, Sajida Ismail, Head of Inflight Product at British Airways, said,

“When we launched our Club Suite product, it was a huge hit with our customers who loved the privacy the new seat offers. We are focused on the roll out of this product and other cabin enhancements to ensure we deliver on our commitment to provide the very best British quality, style and comfort for our customers.”
