British Airways is planning to add a third daily rotation between London Heathrow Airport and New York's Newark Airport. The flight will be operated by one of the airline's Boeing 777-200ER aircraft and will be timed to depart Newark in the morning from its launch in June.

Historically, London to New York has always been British Airways' flagship route. It was the primary service operated by Concorde, with the BA1 callsign more recently being used for A318 services from London to New York via a stop in Ireland. It made sense for British Airways to focus on the route as it was the world's most profitable before the pandemic.

A third Newark rotation

Yesterday British Airways revealed that it would be launching a third daily rotation between its London Heathrow home and Newark's Liberty International Airport serving New York. The new service will launch on June 6th, barring any unforeseen changes.

British Airways is targeting the new service for daytime travelers originating in the United States. The jet will take off from Newark at 07:55, allowing passengers to spend the night in the New York area before arriving in London in the evening. Passengers will then have the possibility to spend the entire day in London, as the new return flight departs from Heathrow at 19:10. Return fares on the route will start at $690 for the economy cabin, rising to a minimum of $3,195 in the business class cabin.

Commenting on the launch, the airline's Director of Network and Alliances, Neil Chernoff, remarked,

“We are pleased to be launching our third daily flight from Newark, to further strengthen our New York – London schedule. The convenient morning departure is popular with customers who might prefer having an extra night in New York or arriving in London in the evening to start their following day more refreshed."

These flights are joined by British Airways' flights to New York's JFK Airport. Between itself and partner airline American Airlines, the carriers are the only ones to offer services to and from both major London and New York airports. The two carriers have combined daily departures of 15 flights. British Airways is due to move into American Airlines' terminal at JFK later this year.
