Oneworld alliance members British Airways and Malaysian Airlines have signed a codeshare agreement that comes into effect today October 2nd, 2019. The new codeshare routes added include 14 destinations that Malaysian Airlines flies to in Asia and Australasia.
The domestic Malaysian codeshare routes include:
- Alor Setar
- Kota Kinabalu
- Johor Bahru
- Kuching, Kuantan
- Kuala Terengganu
- Kota Bharu
The new codeshare routes in Asia include three in Indonesia, one in Cambodia and one in Vietnam.
The Malaysian Airline codeshare routes in Asia include:
- Phnom Penh
- Ho Chi Minh City
The new Australasian codeshare routes include:
The new codeshare will enhance BA frequent flyer miles
Flights to all the above-mentioned cities are available to be booked today at ba.com for travel starting on or after October 9th, 2019.
British Airways is pleased to codeshare with Malaysian Airlines on these routes as it gives its customers more flexibility when flying between Great Britain and the Asia Pacific.
With the new codeshare, passengers will have a greater choice of routes, flexible fares, and new destinations.
Passengers will also be able to check through to their final destination and be able to download or print out their boarding passes in advance. For British Airways Executive Club members the new codeshare agreement will enhance their frequent flyer benefits that can be used towards part payment of flights and hotels as well as upgrades on British Airways flights.
Kuala Lumpur is a huge hub for flights to Asia
A statement released by British Airways to announce the new codeshare agreement with Malaysian Airlines Director of Networks and Alliances Neil Chernoff said:
“This codeshare with Malaysia Airlines further strengthens the destination proposition for our customers, giving them more benefits when flying to Asia and South West Pacific. Malaysia Airlines shares our commitment to excellent customer service, and we are delighted that we can introduce more of our customers to their network.”

When expressing his pleasure over the new agreement in the same BA statement Malaysia Airlines’ Group Chief Executive Officer, Captain Izham Ismail said:

This development coincides with the launch of Visit Malaysia 2020, a landmark initiative uniting industry players behind a shared goal of welcoming 30 million tourists to Malaysia in the year 2020, making the upcoming year a particularly exciting time to visit and enjoy the country’s warm hospitality and diverse cultural attractions.”
Thanks to the new codeshare agreement Malaysian Airlines passengers can book seats to Aberdeen, Belfast, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester and Newcastle on the Malaysia Airlines website. Flights to the above cities all depart from London Heathrow (LHR), to which Malaysian Airlines flies twice daily.
After receiving regulatory approval Malaysian Airlines will codeshare with British Airways on routes to major European cities that include Barcelona, Berlin, Brussels, Copenhagen, Geneva, Hamburg, Lyon, Paris, Toulouse, and Zurich.
The latest codeshare for Malaysian Airlines follows on from a similar deal with Oneworld member Japan Airlines.
Soon after signing a memorandum of understanding for a joint business agreement with Japan Airlines, Malaysian signed a pact with Singapore Airlines to expand their codeshare while looking for opportunities to collaborate further.
