Six months after DHL flight D07216 had an accident after landing at the Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in San José, Costa Rica, a new video has emerged showing the exact moment of the runway excursion.

The video

On Thursday, a new video (embedded below) showing the exact moment a Boeing 757-200 freighter from DHL touched down in San José and skidded on a collapsed left-landing gear was published on social media. The video, posted by air plus news, shows how the aircraft exited the runway and was heavily damaged, breaking into two pieces. The accident took place on April 7 at 09:34 local time. DHL was operating flight D07216 bound for Guatemala City, but the crew had to report to San José.

The aircraft involved in the accident had a registration number HP-2010DAE. It was a 22.3-year-old Boeing 757-200 operating with a Panamanian registration. Before crash-landing in San José, the crew had reported a problem with the left hydraulic landing gear. There were no casualties due to the accident.

According to Simple Flying's research on the entity’s website, Costa Rica's Civil Aviation Authority has not released a preliminary report on the accident. Per ICAO’s Annex 13, States in charge of an investigation must submit a Preliminary Report to ICAO within thirty days of the date of the accident. However, it is the State’s discretion to decide whether this preliminary report is marked as confidential or remains public.

Costa Rica’s civil aviation authorities, the US National Transport Safety Board (NTSB), Panama’s civil aviation authorities, and DHL are participating in the investigation procedures.

The aftermath of the accident

Following the accident of flight D07216, DHL released a statement confirming that the Boeing 757-200F sustained damage upon landing at Juan Santamaria airport in Costa Rica. The airline was pleased to report that the crew underwent medical checks and were physically unharmed.

A week after the accident, the aircraft remained stuck for a week on the side of the airport’s runway. During that week, the operations at the hub continued normally, said Ricardo Hernández, general director of Aeris, the airport’s administrator. The authorities closed San José airport on April 13 and 14 for five hours to remove the debris from the crash.

The team had to stabilize the broken parts of the aircraft, place them on a flat site and unload the cargo it was carrying. During both days, there was “mobilization work on the accident aircraft in the green area south of the kilo taxiway,” said Aeris.
