San Francisco to Zanzibar – under $2.5k in business

The white sand beaches of the islands of Zanzibar are just a hop away this October, with lie flat business class seats from San Francisco for under $2,500. For this long trip across the globe, this represents a saving of some $4,000+ compared with usual prices for the route.

Departing on October 12th, passengers will be onboard KLM’s Boeing 787-10 from SFO for the 10-hour flight to Amsterdam. After a short layover, the onward journey is taken care of with its Boeing 777 to Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ), arriving at 20:10 the next day. The return flight is on October 22nd, giving intrepid travelers more than 2 weeks to explore the best of this tropical paradise.

KLM’s business class on the Dreamliner is a thoroughly modern, very comfortable product. The reverse herringbone 1-2-1 layout gives everyone direct aisle access and plenty of privacy for the trip. Window seats are best for solo travelers, and are angled towards the window for easy cloud-gazing. Middle seats face inward, with a lowerable divider making them perfect for couples.

The 777 is due a cabin refresh. At present, it has the Collins Diamond seat in a 2-2-2 configuration, which isn’t the most spacious of onboard products. Nevertheless, it’s still fully flat and comes with KLM’s fabulous onboard service, and it’s the shorter leg of the journey too.

Zanzibar is still a relatively unknown gem, with flawless white sand beaches and more than 40 islands spread across the Indian Ocean ripe for exploration. The climate, people, and luxurious accommodation give any Caribbean break a run for its money, and the lack of tourists makes it doubly appealing!

Washington DC to Nairobi - $2k on Delta

Kenya is one of those bucket-list destinations that we always wanted to make room for, but probably never did. Well, perhaps this October is the time to right that wrong, with round-trip flights from Baltimore/Washington all the way to Nairobi for just $2,162. Departing on October 11th and returning on the 25th, travelers will get a solid two weeks to explore the wonders of the region.

The first leg, just one and a half hours, will connect Washington passengers to Delta’s long-haul operations at New York JFK. From here, they’ll board the Boeing 767 for the eight-hour trip to Accra in Ghana. There, one final connection onto Kenya Airways will zip passengers eastwards to their final destination of Nairobi.

Delta’s 767s got a makeover during the pandemic, and while the bones of the business class product haven’t changed, they’ve gotten new leather, a much sleeker finish, and a new memory foam cushion for a more comfortable sleep. The cabin is laid out in a 1-2-1 configuration, with direct aisle access for everyone. It’s less private than some more modern products, but still offers exceptional space. If traveling solo, opt for an odd-numbered window seat for maximum privacy, as the seat is against the window and further from the aisle.

The two-class Boeing 737 operated by Kenya Airways has a 16-seat ‘Premier World’ cabin, with recliner seats in a 2-2 layout. The product is nothing to write home about, but it’s spacious and comfortable for a 737. It’s a chance to fly a rare airline into its home airport, and that more than makes up for the lack of lie-flat capabilities.

Nairobi is a fabulous base camp from which to experience the best of east Africa’s landscapes and wildlife. The plains of the Serengeti ad the Masai Mara are just some of the national parks within striking distance, perfect for a game drive, or you can get up close and personal with some of the rescued elephants and giraffes at the local sanctuary. Lake Nakuru is home to more than 240 bird species, while the ancient city of Mombasa offers a glimpse into colonial history.

If more lie flat is worth it for you, there’s an alternative flight operating on the same dates with KLM for just $27 more. This would see you on the A330 to Amsterdam and then the 777 to Nairobi, with more attractive layovers too. This type of trip is usually priced in the region of $4k - $6k, so a real bargain to be had.

The hop to Vienna is onboard Austrian’s Airbus A320, with the typical Euro business arrangement. However, once at Vienna, the onward trip is onboard its Boeing 777 with a fully lie flat seat for the 10-hour trip. The seat is good, but the catering on Austrian is what it’s all about. DO & CO provides the culinary feast, with a local twist including distinctive Viennese coffee.

The opportunities for fun in Bangkok are limitless, from visiting the giant reclining Buddha at Wat Pho to riding the air-conditioned Sky Train around the city. Chatuchak Market is the best place to find local food and souvenirs, and the nightlife at Khao San Road is the stuff of legends. It’s more than enough to fill two weeks, or you could choose to spend part of your time out on the islands or exploring the countryside away from the city.
