Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines will fly its beloved Airbus A350-900 aircraft on several domestic and international routes to kick off the New Year. The airline released data that indicates its widebody flagship jet is scheduled to fly nearly 900 flights next month.

Delta, the leader in the North America Mainline and Network categories this month, will stay busy after the holiday travel rush. While the carrier will continue to deploy the A350 on notable long-haul routes, some domestic destinations will see the aircraft for the first time.

Internationally

The majority of the A350s international routes next month will originate from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, both of which are Delta’s hubs.

Although it is worth noting that Delta has a whopping 45 scheduled flights between Los Angeles and Sydney, the airline is fairly new to Cape Town. This month, the carrier inaugurated flights to the South African city operating seven weekly nonstop flights in addition to the airline’s existing daily service from Atlanta to Johannesburg. Delta said the expanded Cape Town service represents a 67% increase in capacity to South Africa over last year.

On the domestic side of the operation, Los Angeles will not be the only destination out west to see the A350 regularly.

Minneapolis to the desert

Delta’s A350 arriving at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport from its hub in Minneapolis next month will be a welcome sight for plane spotters. Additionally, passengers will enjoy flying on a more spacious aircraft. The increase in total monthly seats comes as the Valley of the Sun prepares to host Super Bowl LVII in February. The A350 schedule to Phoenix has more flights than any other domestic route for the aircraft in January.

When compared to major hubs around the US, Phoenix does not see many regular passenger widebody aircraft, whether domestic or international. American Airlines, British Airways, and Hawaiian Airlines are the only carriers that operate widebodies year-round. Before starting regular nonstop service to London, American operated Boeing 787 and 777s seasonally on domestic routes. Condor has flown to Phoenix seasonally from Frankfurt with the Boeing 767-300ER.

Sustainable and comfortable

Delta received delivery of its first Airbus A350-900 in the summer of 2017. There are 26 A350s in the carrier’s fleet, with 18 more reportedly on order. Delta said its flagship aircraft provides a world-class customer experience, enhances cargo capacity, reduces unit costs, and contributes to a more sustainable future.

Most of its A350 fleet is equipped with 306 seats which consist of 32 Delta One Suites, 48 recliners in premium select, 36 extra-legroom economy seats, and 190 regular economy seats. A handful of aircraft are ex-LATAM jets that have not been retrofitted to Delta’s configuration and have 339 seats onboard.

It appears that Delta will prioritize most of its A350s on international routes and will deploy the former LATAM birds on some domestic routes, as indicated above, with Detroit to Tokyo-Haneda and Detroit to Honolulu. With 31 flights, 9,486 total seats are scheduled for Tokyo-Haneda. Honolulu-bound flights, which are also every day of the month, have 10,509 total monthly seats.
