Delta Air Lines will stop operating flights between Boston and Westchester this fall, less than a year after launching the route. The carrier will shift flights over to Atlanta, which will benefit from up to six daily services to Westchester, and Detroit.

Delta to scrap Boston-Westchester

Data from Cirium reveals Delta will cease flying between Boston Logan Airport (BOS) and Westchester County Airport (HPN) in September. The route launched in October 2022 and is operated by Delta Connection partner Republic Airways with its Embraer ERJ-170 and ERJ-175 jets.

The 166-mile route - one of the shortest in Delta's network clocking in at around one hour - will end on August 31st. Delta will continue to serve Westchester from Atlanta (ATL) and Detroit (DTW) - Simple Flying has contacted the airline for comment and will update this story accordingly.

BOS-HPN was an ideal route for Delta passengers connecting to the airline's transatlantic network - the carrier flies to several European cities out of Boston, including Amsterdam, London and Paris. The choice of Delta connections is, of course, much wider at Atlanta, but the flight is over twice as long.

Bolstering Atlanta and Detroit frequencies

Delta currently offers 17 weekly flights between Boston and Westchester, most of which will shift to Atlanta come September. The airline already operates 33 weekly ATL-HPN flights, set to increase to 47 with the end of BOS-HPN.

Delta will offer more than 8,000 seats between Atlanta and Westchester in September - over 2,000 more than its current schedule - before adding another daily flight in October. There will also be an extra daily flight from Detroit, taking the carrier to four daily services on this route and over 4,250 weekly seats available. Delta will offer over 48,000 seats from ATL and DTW in September, increasing to over 54,000 in October.

Which airlines fly to Westchester?

Westchester County may be losing its only direct service from Boston, but the airport enjoys decent connections to major airports across the US, including Chicago O'Hare (ORD), Miami (MIA) and Orlando (MCO). However, it now lacks a transcontinental connection after low-cost carrier Breeze Airways suspended its service to LAX this month, citing capacity issues at Westchester.

HPN handles less than two million passengers annually, with JetBlue making up around half its market - the airline recently announced a new seasonal service to Martha's Vineyard, which will also be served by "semi-private" airline JSX this summer.

Along with JetBlue and Delta, the airport is served by American Airlines (American Eagle), Breeze Airways, Cape Air, Tradewind Aviation and United Express, with the latter scrapping its sole route from Chicago at the end of June.
