EgyptAir is putting its newly delivered Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner on the Cairo-Beijing route starting on Sunday, the 18th of August. The plane was handed over to EgyptAir on Tuesday and flew to Cairo the following day.
EgyptAir took delivery of its sixth and last Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner on Tuesday in Everett, Washington, via a lease agreement with Dublin based AerCap. Taking advantage of a new program being offered by Boeing, EgyptAir filled up its new jet with biofuel for the flight home to Cairo.
By promoting the use of biofuel EgyptAir is showing its commitment to sustainable fuels and the efficiency of its new fleet.
EgyptAir is committed to sustainable growth
In a press release, chairman and CEO of EGYPTAIR Holding Company Ahmed Adel spoke of this saying,
“We are committed to the sustainable growth of our airline and supporting commercial aviation’s efforts to protect the environment.”
“The 787-9 Dreamliner is a great fit for our network and provides our customers with a responsible choice for air travel.”
Boeing is, of course, proud of its 787s. The aircraft is designed using lightweight composite materials and highly efficient engines, making it able to produce 20 to 25% fewer emissions than the plane it is replacing.
These savings, according to Boeing, is equivalent to taking 10 million cars off the road for a year.
The Seattle to Cairo flight is the world’s longest using sustainable fuel
The 16 hours 35 minute 5,925 nautical-mile (10,973 km) flight from Seattle to Cairo now holds the record for the longest ever flight using biofuel.
“Boeing and the industry believe sustainable fuel has significant long-term potential to help commercial aviation earn its license to keep growing and meet our climate goals,” said Sheila Remes, vice president of Strategy at Boeing Commercial Airplanes.
The fuel for the EgyptAir 787-9 flight was produced by a Paramount, California company called “World Energy” who produce biofuel from agricultural waste. This fuel is then blended with conventional jet fuel, so that it can be used without needing to modify any of the aircraft’s engines.
The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner can be configured to carry between 210 and 330 passengers and has a range of 14,800 to 15,700 km non-stop. The new EgyptAir 787-9 is due to enter service on August 18th with its inaugural flight to Beijing, China returning on the 20th of August to Cairo.
EgyptAir’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner will offer a two-cabin layout with 30 business class seats and 279 economy class seats, according to Albert Aviation. Configured in a herringbone fashion, the 30 lay-flat business class seats will be laid out 1-2-1 to maximize cabin space aboard the plane.
In economy class seats the seats are laid out 3-3-3 and have a width of 18 inches. Each seat comes with its entertainment screen, with 18-inch screens in business and 12-inch screens in economy class. Live television news is available throughout the flight as is onboard WiFi.
More and more Chinese tourists are visiting Egypt
As ties between Egypt and China continue to grow stronger, more and more Chinese tourists are expected to visit Egypt in the coming years.
When speaking about this with Egypt Today, Chinese cultural counselor to Egypt, Shi Yuewen said,
“Nearly half a million Chinese tourists visited Egypt in 2018 compared with only 300,000 in 2017, which is a big leap.”
According to Shi, Egypt’s efforts in combatting terrorism and making sure heritage sites are protected will encourage more Chinese citizens to visit Egypt.
Shi added, “Chinese tourists adore Egyptian monuments, and Egyptian archaeological sites are well-known to the Chinese who have a similarly ancient civilization.”
