On Saturday, Egyptair MS643 from Cairo to Jeddah suffered a burst tire on arrival. The Boeing 737 landed safely with no passenger injuries reported, and an investigation underway into the cause.

The aircraft

On May 27th, Egyptair flight MS643 departed Cairo International Airport (CAI) at 22:53, around an hour and a half later than it was supposed to, and the Boeing 737-800 aircraft arrived at King Abdulaziz International Airport (JED), Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, at the early hours at 12:53, on Sunday, May 28th. Upon landing in JED, the aircraft experienced a tire blowout.

The carrier confirmed the landing had no casualties or injuries and arrived safely. Simple Flying reached out to EgyptAir, and a spokesperson commented,

"It is still too early to advise you of a probable root cause as the case is still under investigation by the concerned personnel."

The aircraft involved is one of the carrier's Boeing 737-800, which is configured with a total of 154 seats split into 16 seats in the business class cabin in a two-two layout and 138 seats in the economy class cabin in a three-three layout. At the time of publishing, the aircraft is still in JED and has not operated the return flight MS644 to CAI.

Considering that the incident occurred just this morning, it would take some time for the investigation to be completed and establish the cause of the incident.

How an investigation works

The methods of investigating aircraft accidents and incidents have been specified in ICAO's 13th annex, which was established during the Chicago Convention, of which most countries (or states) are now a part.

Responsibility for initiating an investigation

It is stated that when an accident or a serious incident occurs within the territories of the convention's contracting state, the state of occurrence is to initiate the investigation. However, if the state of occurrence does not wish to instigate the investigation, this responsibility then falls to the state in which the aircraft is registered or the state of the operator.

In the event that an incident occurs within the territory of a non-contracting state or outside the territory of any state, then it is up to the state of registry or operator to commence the investigation.

Parties allowed to participate in an investigation

It is imperative that the investigation is efficiently conducted; thus, only the required personnel are allowed to be involved. Hence, the state of the registry and/or operator is allowed to be involved in the investigation alongside the state of design and state of manufacture of the aircraft.

Other states required for additional information, facilities, or expertise can also be represented in the investigation. If passengers have experienced serious injuries or fatalities, the state of the passengers affected is allowed to appoint a representative who is entitled to visit the scene of the accident/incident, access facts, identify the citizen of their nation, and receive a copy of the investigation's final report.

ICAO states that it has to be notified when the aircraft involved in any accident or serious incident has a maximum mass of more than 4,960 lb (2,250 kg) and that a final report has to be submitted to the ICAO if the aircraft's maximum mass is 12,566 lb (5,700 kg).

Conclusion

Because the incident with Egyptair only happened this morning, it might be a while before the reasons behind it can be established. And as mentioned above, the investigation must follow the protocols the ICAO laid out. However, any further information released by the authorities or the airline will be updated in this article or subsequent articles.
