Emirates will return the A380 to Kuala Lumpur this December. That month, the superjumbo will also resume Houston and Perth, again operate nonstop flights to Auckland, and already be serving Bengaluru, which will welcome the double-decker for the first time from October 30th.

The A380 to Kuala Lumpur

It has taken nearly three years, but Emirates will resume A380 service to Kuala Lumpur on December 1st. The schedule is shown below, with all times local. Notice the long on-the-ground durations. The reason it's so odd is that the third daily flight is not back. Emirates is therefore mixing and matching times, presumably, in part, to best cover onward connectivity.

  • Dubai to Kuala Lumpur: EK346, 03:30-14:35 (7h 5m block time); A380
  • Dubai to Kuala Lumpur: EK342, 10:35-21:50 (7h 15m); B777-300ER
  • Kuala Lumpur to Dubai: EK343, 01:45-05:05 (7h 20m); A380
  • Dubai to Kuala Lumpur: EK345, 10:15-13:20 (7h 5m); B777-300ER

Emirates adds 21% more seats

The A380 will replace the B777-300ER to Malaysia, with the Boeing twin-engine remaining on Emirates' other daily service to the capital. Switching to the double-decker means that December roundtrip seats for sale have risen by more than a fifth from 44,622 planned last week to 54,199.

According to OAG data, economy seats have increased by 7,137 (+19%), business capacity is up by 2,074 (+40%), and there are an extra 366 first class seats (+37%) to sell.

A380 flights: December 14th

Emirates will have 61 departing A380 flights from Dubai on a handful of December dates, more than any other time since the pandemic struck. December 14th is one of them, with morning flights (from the first of the day until noon) summarized below.

How it structures its schedules, and therefore traffic flows, is evident. For example, in the very early morning, it is mainly services bound for Asia-Pacific, fed from large numbers of routes from Europe and the Middle East. There are also some very early departures to North America (and the inevitable Heathrow), especially fed from South Asia.

Later on: December 14th

The pattern in the afternoon is visible, with many Europe-bound A380 services; passengers from Asia-Pacific and Africa feed them. Two evening departures to India are timed for arrivals from certain European and Middle East ports, yes, but crucially also North America.
