On August 15th, Emirates announced another airline codeshare partnership. Emirates passengers can now book flights to various locations across Greece, thanks to the airline's new agreement with Aegean Airlines. The partnership will allow passengers traveling to regional destinations across Greece to transition between an Emirates flight and an Aegean flight without booking separately. Additionally, passengers will have peace of mind knowing that their luggage will be rerouted with them smoothly.

Greek expansion

Beginning immediately, Emirates passengers will be able to book flights to domestic destinations across Greece on the Emirates website. The expansion into Greece is a result of the latest partnership between Emirates and Aegean Airlines. The partnership will allow for a smooth transition between the two airlines for passengers looking to fly between Dubai and various destinations across Greece. Aegean passengers can also do the opposite and book flights from the same destinations across Greece to Dubai. One of the most significant benefits of this partnership for passengers will be the consistent baggage policy. The partnership will make the transition between two different airlines smoother and reduce the risk of luggage being misplaced during the transition.

Under the codeshare agreement, Emirates will put its code on flights operated by Aegean. Aegean will also place its code on flights operated by Emirates that were booked through Aegean. The new partnership offers more convenient access to eight domestic destinations across Greece. These destinations are all served by Aegean from its Athens hub. The destinations include Mikonos, Kerkyra, Chania, Rhodes, Thira, Thessaloniki, Alexandropoulos, and Irakleion, Greece. Tickets are already available on Emirates' and Aegean's websites for customers to purchase.

Emirates currently utilizes its fleet of Boeing 777s to operate 12 flights between Dubai and Athens weekly. Beginning in October 2022, It will launch a new fifth freedom route between New York, Newark (EWR), and Athens (ATH). This route will also be operated by a 777. For Emirates passengers, the travel possibilities are endless. Upon reaching Athens, the eight locations mentioned will be available; however, once traveling with Aegean, passengers can access the 21 other domestic destinations it serves. The passengers traveling to Dubai will be able to travel anywhere in the world through Emirates' central hub with even more connections via other airlines all across the planet.

Emirates comment to Simple Flying

Simple Flying reached out to Emirates and asked how many passengers it anticipates will take advantage of this new offering. A spokesperson for Emirates had this to say,

"Emirates has been serving Greece for over 25 years and is the only carrier to offer non-stop flights between Greece and Dubai. On average, we carry nearly 270,000 passengers between Dubai and Athens annually, and with the new partnership with Aegean airlines, we anticipate this number and more passengers to benefit from the increased connectivity to the new 8 Greek cities and the following 8 European regional points via Athens."

Simple Flying also asked if it expects Aegean customers to begin using Emirates due to the convenient transition. The spokesperson stated,

"Through this partnership, Emirates will not only provide Aegean Airlines’ customers its world-class service and premium product offerings, it will also provide a convenient stopover in its hub, Dubai, onwards to over 130 cities worldwide. For over 5 years, Emirates has provided travellers convenient connections to New York Newark from Athens, and to New York JFK from Milan, both connections will now be available for Aegean Airlines’ customers to benefit from."

Codeshare agreement

Emirates has utilized its codeshare agreement plan with other transportation businesses for years. The airline now has 26 airline partners, 110 interline partners, and two rail partners. Emirates offers global connectivity servicing six continents through its routes and partnerships. On its own, it services over 130 cities through its hub in Dubai on its fleet of Boeing 777s and Airbus A380s.

The latest addition to its list of codeshare partnerships, the partnership with Aegean will soon be expanding to new routes. In October 2022, the joint partnership will expand its codeshare network further into Europe. The joint venture will offer air transit access between Athens and Bucharest, Romania, Naples, Italy, and Belgrade, Serbia. Emirates will also be launching a fifth freedom service between New York (JFK) and Milan, Italy (MXP).
