Two weeks ago, Emirates was scheduled to operate the A380 to Hamburg through the winter and next summer. And in the latest schedule filing over the weekend, all quadjet flights on the route have gone, although it could change later.

No more A380 to Hamburg

Emirates' last A380 flight from Dubai to Hamburg was on October 31st, according to Flightradar24. The airline has operated the four-engine double-decker to the city since October 29th, 2018, so the end – for now, anyway – comes almost exactly four years after it started.

Emirates will still operate 2x daily flights to Hamburg this winter and next summer, just entirely by the 777-300ER. The schedule is as follows, with all times local:

  • Dubai to Hamburg: EK59, 08:50-12:55 (7h 5m block time), 1x daily, 777-300ER
  • Dubai to Hamburg: EK61, 15:00-19:05 (7h 5m), 1x daily, 777-300ER
  • Hamburg to Dubai: EK60, 14:40-00:10+1 (6h 30m)
  • Hamburg to Dubai: EK62, 21:00-06:30+1 (6h 30m)

Emirates to Hamburg: a summary

The Middle East giant has a long history of serving Hamburg. It started flights to the city more than 16 years ago on March 1st, 2006. It had a 1x daily operation from day one, initially by the A330-200 and shortly after that by the A340-500 and 777-300ER. Over the years, the non-ER 777-300ER was also used frequently, along with the 777-200ER, 777-200LR – and A380.

In October 2006, the route switched to Dubai-Hamburg-New York JFK, which lasted until March 2008. EK205 left Dubai at 08:55 and arrived in Hamburg at 12:55, while EK206 departed Hamburg at 14:45 and arrived home at 23:55. Notice that the timings are nearly identical to EK59/EK60 now, which is because they're fed by, and feed, Emirates' largest number of Asia-Pacific flights.

Cirium data shows that Emirates has operated 17,876 roundtrip Hamburg flights in the past 16 years. It has had over seven million seats for sale, and over 5.5 million passengers have flown it. Several hundred tons of freight have also been transported; 777-300ERs have an especially good freight capacity.

Where do Hamburg passengers go?

Analyzing booking data for 2019, the last full year unaffected by coronavirus, shows that Emirates carried approximately 482,000 Hamburg passengers. As Dubai is a popular point-to-point (P2P) market, it shouldn't be too surprising that about 42% of passengers were local and didn't transit beyond the UAE hub. Emirates' nonstops carried over 90% of P2P passengers.

An estimated 58% of passengers did transit. By far the most popular routing was Hamburg via Dubai to Bangkok, followed by Colombo, Male, Phuket, Singapore, Manila, Seychelles, Mauritius, Tehran (despite the backtracking), and Sydney. Southeast Asia and South Asia had about six in every ten transit passengers, with Thailand, India, Australia, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives the most popular countries.
