Eurowings Discover will temporarily replace Lufthansa between Munich and Montréal. It is the latest route shift from the full-service carrier to the Lufthansa Group's leisure airline. And if that's not enough, Eurowings Discover will deploy leased Finnair A350s to Montréal.

Lufthansa pause Munich to Montréal

Eurowings Discover is the leisure airline of the Lufthansa Group. It was created because Lufthansa felt that it did not have the right platform to appropriately or effectively target tourists in terms of costs, product, and brand.

Now the subsidiary will replace the mainline offering from Munich and Montréal, albeit only between June 1st and July 31st, after which it'll revert to Lufthansa. The details are as follows, with precisely the same schedule as the parent. Indeed, passengers will still transit over Munich exactly as if Lufthansa itself were operating:

  • Munich to Montréal: 4Y76, 17:00-19:00 (8h block time), 1x daily (Lufthansa codeshares as LH4282)
  • Montréal to Munich: 4Y77, 20:50-10:10+1 (7h 20m), 1x daily (LH4283)

Using leased Finnair A350-900s

Eurowings Discover is leasing A350-900s from Finnair. Flightradar24 shows that it has thus far used three specific aircraft: OH-LWA, OH-LWB, and OH-LWG. This summer, six routes, rather than the previous five, will see the A350:

  1. Frankfurt to Tampa: A350 from May 31st, 6x weekly
  2. Frankfurt to Las Vegas: A350 from May 16th, 4x weekly (May 15th in the other direction)
  3. Munich and Montréal: A350 from June 1st, 1x daily
  4. Munich to Las Vegas: A350 from May 15th, 2x weekly
  5. Frankfurt to Calgary: A350 from August 1st, up to 4x weekly
  6. Frankfurt to Halifax: A350 on just four occasions in September (fewer flights than previously scheduled)

The ability of Finnair to lease out aircraft during the peak summer is, of course, because they're unneeded due to service to China and Japan remaining firmly down and from Russia-driven woes. Earlier this month, I looked at where British Airways is using its leased Finnair A321s.

The latest Lufthansa route to switch

The Canadian city is the latest long-haul route switched to Eurowings Discover, as detailed below. However, unlike Montréal, these are permanent shifts. Some, like Calgary, use Discover's different platform to bring the route back for the Group. If Discover didn't exist, they'd likely not be operated.

  1. Frankfurt to Calgary: Lufthansa operated April 2008-February 2012; Eurowings Discover 3x to 4x weekly August 1st-October 15th
  2. Frankfurt to Tampa: September 2015-March 2020, and in May 2022 only; Discover started December 2021 but paused on April 30th. It'll be back from May 31st, again replacing Lufthansa, with 6x weekly
  3. Frankfurt to Panama City: May 2016-March 2020; Discover launched on March 27th and has 3x weekly
  4. Frankfurt to Windhoek: June-August 2021; Discover from August 2021
