Before we talk about Eva Air and its cargo operations with the McDonnell Douglas MD-11, let's first take a closer look and see why Eva Air came to be. When celebrating 20 years after the funding of the Evergreen Marine Corporation, the world's fifth-largest shipping company, chairman Chang Yung-fa announced his intentions to establish Taiwan's first private international airline.

The opportunity arose after the Taiwanese government overhauled the country's air transportation system. The only criteria for starting a private airline were that the company had global experience and financial capital, of which Evergreen Marine had both. The new airline was originally called to be called Evergreen Airways, but this was deemed too similar to the shipping company.

EVA Air is based in Taipei

Based at Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) near Taipei, Taiwan, operations began on July 1, 1991, with a small fleet of Boeing 767-300ER aircraft. The initial destinations were all in Asia before the airline added its first European destination (Vienna, Austria) towards the end of the year.

In 1992 Eva Air received the first of many Boeing 747-400 aircraft, which it deployed on transpacific flights to Los Angeles and then later to Seattle and New York.

Eva Air was known for its premium economy seating

Eva Air was known for its quality service and innovative premium economy class seating and was the first airline to offer 2+4+2 seating on a Boeing 747. By 1994 Eva Air was flying to 22 destinations from Taiwan, transporting over three million passengers per year. In 1995 the airline posted its first profit on revenues of $1.05 billion.

The same year Eva Air started a dedicated cargo division with McDonnell Douglas MD-11 freighter flights from Taipei to Singapore, Penang, San Francisco, New York, and Los Angeles. Previously Eva Air had relied solely on passenger flights for moving cargo.
