Flyr is in expansion mode, with 12 new summer-seasonal routes taking off in less than one week from Oslo Gardermoen, Bergen, and Stavanger. That's a significant number for an airline that will celebrate its first anniversary at the end of June.

By 'new' routes, I mean not previously served by the carrier. All but three are served by at least one operator, showing that, generally speaking, Flyr targets existing markets – even those that are pretty thin – rather than brand-new.

International is key for Flyr

International is an essential part of Flyr's operation. According to the latest data from OAG, over four in ten departing flights (43%) between June and August is international. In July, the peak period for summer leisure flights due to Norway's school holidays, international has over one in every two flights (52%).

However, as I show below, Flyr has changed multiple international routes to end in August rather than October, thereby capturing peak demand before children return to school and hoping to achieve higher fares. It'll be interesting to see how aircraft are deployed.

12 new routes

The following will all begin between June 9th and 15th. When writing, on the 10th, there's one new route: Bergen, the location for this year's Routes Europe, to Malaga. It is one of nine routes to have direct competition. In contrast, Flyr is the only carrier on Bergen-Zadar (no service in the past 20 years), Oslo-Montpellier (served by Sterling April 2005-October 2007), and Oslo-Thessaloniki (SAS July-August 2018).

  1. Oslo to Venice: started June 9th; up to 3x weekly; ends September 25th (competes with Norwegian, up to 3x weekly)
  2. Bergen to Nice: June 9th; up to 2x weekly; ends September 10th (Norwegian and Widerøe, both up to 3x)
  3. Oslo to Ibiza: June 9th; 2x weekly; ends August 11th (Norwegian 2x)
  4. Stavanger to Nice: June 9th; up to 2x weekly; ends September 10th (Norwegian 2x, SAS 1x)
  5. Bergen to Malaga: June 10th; 2x weekly, then 1x; ends August 27th (Norwegian 3x)
  6. Bergen to Zadar: June 11th; 1x weekly; ends September 21st (no direct competition)
  7. Oslo to Montpellier: June 11th; 2x weekly; ends August 13th (no direct competition)
  8. Oslo to Naples: June 11th; 2x weekly; ends August 13th (Norwegian 2x)
  9. Oslo to Thessaloniki: June 11th; 2x weekly; ends August 27th (no direct competition)
  10. Oslo to Dubrovnik: June 13th; up to 3x weekly; ends August 12th (Norwegian up to 7x, SAS 2x)
  11. Oslo to Palermo: June 14th; 2x weekly; ends August 12th (SAS up to 2x)
  12. Stavanger to Palma: June 15th; 1x weekly; ends August 10th (Sunclass up to 2x; Norwegian 2x)

Changes to other routes

Flyr was always planning to end various routes in mid-August, such as Oslo to Alghero, Dubrovnik, Ibiza, Montpellier, Naples, Palermo, and Valencia. They'll continue to do so.

However, six that were to end in late October, shortly before Flyr changes to winter schedules, will now end much earlier, sometimes nearly three months sooner. That's based on school holidays, higher demand, and no doubt overall booking performance. It doesn't mean that they're cut and won't return next year. They are:

  1. Oslo to Billund: was set to end on October 28th, now August 14th
  2. Oslo to Edinburgh: October 28th, now August 8th
  3. Oslo to Prague: October 27th, now July 24th
  4. Oslo to Thessaloniki: October 29th, now August 27th
  5. Oslo to Venice: October 23rd, now September 25th
  6. Oslo to Zadar: October 29th, now September 24th
