Frontier Airlines Comes To Fort Lauderdale In Latest Expansion

Fast-growing ultra-low-cost Frontier Airlines has announced its latest round of expansion. The airline is adding 18 new nonstop routes and two new destinations: Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. Save for the airline’s expansion to Aguadilla, all other routes will launch in February. In addition to those two cities, San Juan, Puerto Rico, and Cancun, Mexico, are also getting new nonstops.

Albany and Rochester will start on February 18th. Green Bay and Portland will both start on February 19th. The rest of the routes will launch on February 17th.

Fort Lauderdale is already a very competitive airport among low-cost carriers. Hybrid carrier JetBlue has a base there. Southwest Airlines also has a significant presence at the airport. Last but not least, Spirit Airlines is the largest airline at the airport. Frontier will face plenty of competition for travelers.

Puerto Rico’s largest airline and primary gateway to the island is San Juan Airport (SJU). The airline will launch two new routes from the airport in February. Starting on February 17th, the airline will inaugurate four flights per week to Boston (BOS). Then, on the 18th, the airline will start three nonstop flights per week to Hartford (BDL).

Cancun gets more routes

After announcing additional flights to Cancun earlier this fall, Frontier is back again with three new routes, subject to government approval. On February 17th, the airline will inaugurate three flights per week to Hartford (BDL). Then, on the 18th, it will inaugurate three flights per week to Buffalo (BUF). Finally, on February 19th, the airline will inaugurate a weekly service to Providence (PVD) from Cancun.

Speaking on the overall expansion, Daniel Shurz, senior vice president of commercial at Frontier, stated the following:

“We’re excited to announce 18 nonstop routes today and two new destinations; Aguadilla and Fort Lauderdale. Our ‘Low Fares Done Right’ approach to travel isn’t one-size-fits-all, rather Frontier’s unique model is structured to meet the needs of every flyer with affordable fares and customizability. These new flights complement our already expansive network in the Caribbean, Mexico and South Florida, and we look forward to welcoming travelers onboard to these popular vacation destinations this winter, and beyond.”

Growth on the horizon

Frontier Airlines has major growth planned over the decade. After it placed a new aircraft order at the Dubai Air Show in November, the airline is targeting an expansion of its network and an upgauge of its fleet.

Frontier has a history of trying new routes and exiting them if they do not remain profitable. One of its primary objectives is to connect smaller destinations across the US to top vacation gateways. This has led it to develop large bases of operations in leisure destinations like Orlando, Miami, and Las Vegas. These new routes are just the start of more.
