Frontier Airlines, an ultra-low-cost airline in the United States, has been expanding significantly recently. After a failed merger with Spirit Airlines, Frontier announced several new routes and a twelve-month flight subscription service, opened a new crew base, and announced a future base.

The new base at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport will employ more than 450 people within its first year. Between 180 pilots, 275 flight attendants, and airport staff, the airline is projected to contribute almost $120 million in annual wages to the local economy.

Speaking on the opening of the new base, Jake Filene, Senior Vice President Of Customers at Frontier Airlines, said,

"Opening this new crew base is a clear indication of our commitment to continued growth in Phoenix. A thriving and expanding airport is vital to the city’s economic advancement and we are thrilled to be part of that trajectory both as a service provider and major wage contributor.”

Filine added that appreciation and demand for the airline's low-cost services are increasing.

Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego is excited to see the opening of Frontier's new crew base,

“I am pleased to see this particular airline continuing to expand services out of Phoenix. Frontier’s work to set a new greener standard for travel is parallel to the City of Phoenix Aviation Department’s decades-long commitment to sustainability. We are proud of partners like Frontier that not only foster economic growth for our city but are also dedicated to lessening their environmental impact.”

New base at DFW

Yesterday, Frontier announced the opening of a new crew base at Dallas Fort-Worth International Airport in May 2023. The new base will be home to almost 350 pilots and flight attendants and generate more than $78 million in annual wages.

According to the airline, many staff have expressed their desire to be based in Texas. The opening of a new base at DFW will increase competition with the powerhouse of American Airlines, headquartered in Fort Worth.

"We are thrilled to partner with the outstanding leadership at DFW to bring new jobs and meaningful economic impact to the Dallas Forth Worth community. "

Just like with Phoenix, opening a new base will come with new routes. Over the next five years, Frontier plans to double its presence at DFW. Currently, Frontier operates flights to 14 destinations from Dallas Fort-Worth. In Spring 2023, the airline plans to add five more destinations from DFW.
