The ultra-low-cost airline Frontier Airlines unveiled today details of the new special aircraft that will join its fleet next year, featuring the Costa Rican two-toed sloth on its tail. Frontier is known for having a wide variety of animals painted on the tails of its Airbus A320-family fleet. Let’s investigate further.

The new species in Frontier’s family

Frontier has a unique livery style, selecting endangered animals from across the Americas, promoting their backstories, and highlighting their existence. In recent times, Frontier has unveiled Juan, the Puerto Rican parrot, and Bori, the coquí llanero (a small Puerto Rican tree frog).

Now, the low-cost carrier has selected the Costa Rican two-toed sloth to be the next species on a tail of an aircraft. The sloth is yet to be named, and Frontier is currently inviting consumers to vote via social media. The options are Manny, Tony, and Tico (I would vote for the latter, as it is a name used to refer to natives of Costa Rica).

There’s also social media pressure to call it Sid, after the lovely prehistoric sloth of the Ice Age film franchise.

The Hoffmann’s two-toed sloth was chosen to honor Frontier destination partner Costa Rica and highlight this unique species, which is native to the country. Frontier Airlines serves both San Jose and Liberia, Costa Rica, via nonstop service from Orlando.

Tyri Squyres, vice president of marketing at Frontier Airlines, said,

“Our animal tails not only delight adults and children alike, but they serve an important purpose in highlighting animal species, many of which are endangered. Some people come to Costa Rica just to see the sloths and our nonstop service from Orlando to both Liberia and San Jose provides easy, affordable flight options for visitors, as well as for Costa Ricans to travel to the US.”

The aircraft

Despite the announcement that the Costa Rican sloth will be painted on one of Frontier’s incoming aircraft, we don’t know much about said aircraft.

Frontier still has to receive 230 new aircraft in the coming years, one of Airbus’ most significant unfilled orders. The airline will receive 54 Airbus A320neo, 158 Airbus A321neo, and 18 Airbus A321XLR.

According to Frontier, the aircraft with the two-toed sloth will arrive in the company next year.

Frontier’s latest new route

Earlier this week, Frontier announced a new nonstop service from Kansas City to Las Vegas. The route will begin in August 2022 and will be served daily.

Daniel Shurz, senior vice president of commercial at Frontier Airlines, said,

“Frontier is delighted to add Las Vegas to our roster of nonstop destinations from Kansas City. Not only do consumers in the greater Kansas City area now have a new low-fare option to travel to the Entertainment Capital of the US, but we also offer a number of connecting destinations from LAS to cities across the US and Mexico.”
