What To Expect From GOL And Avianca’s Expanded Codeshare Agreement

Today, Avianca and GOL Linhas Aereas announced an expansion of their codeshare agreement. Now, both companies enhanced their connectivity in Brazil and Colombia. In recent months, we’ve seen how Latin American carriers intertwine more their operations as they face the most challenging crisis in aviation history. Let’s investigate further.

What to expect from the expanded agreement?

Both carriers signed the original codeshare agreement in October 2019. Now, they are expanding it as a way to increase their presence in the South American continent.

According to Avianca, the clients of both carriers can access more benefits. These benefits are two or more journeys under one ticket, as well as luggage management. The codeshare agreement applies to any flight between Brazil and Colombia, as well as domestic operations.

Additionally, the airlines signed a Frequent Flyer agreement. Now, travelers of both carriers can gain and use miles on any of the frequent flyer programs, Smiles for GOL and LifeMiles for Avianca.

According to a statement seen by Simple Flying, the codeshare agreement includes 50 destinations in Brazil and 20 in Colombia.

What’s happening recently with Avianca and GOL?

Lately, Avianca is focusing on restarting its domestic and international connectivity. The Colombian carrier was grounded until September. Since then, it has gradually reopened up its bases across the country and relaunched international flights. In November, Avianca will resume flights to London and other destinations like Buenos Aires, Santiago de Chile, Quito, and more.

So far, the company hasn’t published its third-quarter financial results, unlike GOL. The Brazilian low-cost carrier said this week that it had a net loss of $300 million between July and September. Its operating revenues fell by 73.7% compared to last year, while its operating costs fell 44%. Despite that, GOL is hopeful of having a good fourth-quarter. It expects to end the year with a 65% capacity, compared to 2019, flying 490 times per day, serving 172 markets.

Are we seeing an increase in codeshare agreements?

Latin American carriers have been busy lately. This week, we informed that Aeromexico and LATAM Brazil and Colombia launched a new codeshare agreement. The new deal increases the connectivity between Mexico and these two South American countries.

Before that, GOL Linhas Aereas was also busy, launching its codeshare agreement with Ethiopian Airlines. Meanwhile, in Brazil, LATAM and Azul also inked a codeshare that wasn’t even in the mind of anyone before COVID-19. Finally, Avianca also announced its own codeshare with TAP Portugal back in February.
