- LifeMiles are sold in blocks of 1,000 miles costing $33 per 1,000 LifeMiles
If you opt to purchase the maximum number of miles (200,000), you will receive a total of 480,000 Life miles for a cost of $6,600. This works out at 1.37 cents a piece, which when you take into account the normal value of 3.3 cents apiece is an incredible offer.
How Valuable is the Promotion?
Although maximizing the promotion would incur a significant cost, there is some tremendous value to be had with this promotion. Looking at the LifeMiles Star Alliance Partner award chart, there is some great value to be had:
- The US to Europe from 63,000 miles one way in business class
- The US to Europe from 90,000 miles one way in first class
- The US to Japan & China (North Asia) from 75,000 miles one way in business class
- The US to Japan & China (North Asia) from 90,000 miles one way in first class
Checking out LifeMiles award availability, you can fly Lufthansa Business Class on the A380, for 63,000 LifeMiles. Using miles costing you 1,37 cents apiece, the award would set you back $866.25 which is pretty good value
Paying cash for the same flight would set you back over $9,000.
Again, if you want to head west from San Francisco SFO to Tokyo NRT, a one-way award in business class would set you back 75,000 LifeMiles, with this promotion that is a cost of $1,031.25.
If you opt to purchase the ticket cash, you would be paying over $4,500, which is significantly more than purchasing the miles and redeeming them for an award.
Using miles, you purchased with the promotion to redeem for business, and first-class awards can represent great value. Purchasing the maximum number of miles gives you enough for 5 first class flights to Europe or North Asia and would leave you with 30,000 miles spare.
Remembers you can still use your remaining miles, for a cheap economy fare, alternatively, you can transfer American Express Membership Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards, and soon Capital One Venture Miles to Avianca LifeMiles to top your balance. This means points earned from the Chase Sapphire Reserve Card, Chase Sapphire Preferred Card, and Ink Business Preferred Credit Card can be used towards your next LifeMiles redemption.
This is as good as it gets when it comes to buying miles. Although the price of $6,600 is pretty high if you maximize the promotion, you can leverage your miles for many times the value you paid for them. Buying miles speculatively is never recommend holding cash is better, but when the promotion is this good, and you can see yourself using the miles int eh future you may want to give this promotion a much closer look!
