Hurricane Humberto is set to delay flights in the Bahamas, as the second tropical storm in a matter of weeks batters the region. Delta Air Lines is already advising travellers to check information on a regular basis, as flights cope with a disruptive and uncertain climate.

Extreme weather

Humberto has generated some extreme weather conditions in the Bahamas region, following on from the chaos caused by Hurricane Dorian just a couple of weeks ago. Authorities in the Bahamas are urging the local population to exhibit caution after 52 lives were lost in the midst of Hurricane Dorian.

The previous tropical storm in the Bahamas had caused hundreds of flights to be cancelled, and it is already increasingly possible that Hurricane Humberto could have a similar impact. Reports indicate that winds in the Bahamas region have already reached 90mph, and the potential consequences for air traffic are obvious.

After the devastation of Dorian, it was hoped that this spell of extreme weather had reached an end. But with Hurricane Humberto now whipping up, it seems that the region of airspace surrounding the Bahamas is set to be unstable once more.

Airport closures

Hurricane Dorian had even caused some airport closures in the United States, with both Orlando International Airport and Daytona Beach International Airport forced to cease operation. While both airports made every effort to stay open, discussions with a variety of stakeholders, including airline officials, the Federal Aviation Administration, Transportation Security Administration, and Air Traffic Control Tower representatives, enabled an informed decision to be made.

It was only two days ago that weather reports suggested that tropical weather warnings had ceased in the Bahamas region, which was a relief to the population after the disruptive impact of Hurricane Dorian. But within a matter of hours, another tropical storm was brewing, and now Humberto has officially reached hurricane status.

Hurricane Dorian had devastated Grand Bahama International Airport, causing untold damage. Sizeable segments of damage to buildings and aeroplanes have been strewn around the airport and surrounding roads in the region. Some aircraft were so badly damaged as to be completely split into pieces, and many of the aeroplanes resident at the airport have been damaged beyond repair.

Civilian flights

As of yet, there has been no news on when civilian flights will begin again from the airport, and this latest tropical storm will obviously have a massive impact on potential flights in the region. While the Grand Bahama International Airport is the largest and most significant airport in the Bahamas region, other airports and islands have also been severely damaged.

Considering the suffering that has already taken place, we can only hope that this latest hurricane passes by relatively quietly.
