The frequent flyer program for Iberia Airlines, Iberia Plus helps you earn Avios (yes, the same Avios that British Airways and Aer Lingus uses). Many travelers who have never flown Iberia (and it’s not that likely that the average reader has, as this airline primarily serves select European locations and Latin America) won’t consider this frequent flyer program, but you shouldn’t completely mark it off your list.
How to earn Iberia Plus Avios
There are several ways that you can earn Iberia Plus Avios. As an Iberia Plus member, you’ll earn Avios based on your fare class and the distance flown. You’ll also earn Avios for flights you take with oneworld members.
There are several credit cards that you can apply for to earn Avios, but the catch is, most of them are with Spanish banks so you have to be living in Spain. However, because of the Iberia-British Airways relationship, you can get the British Airways Visa Signature® Credit Card and transfer your Avios to Iberia AND, the airline very recently launched its own Chase card, the Iberia Visa Signature credit card, for those living outside Spain. You can also convert Chase Ultimate Rewards points to Avios at a 1:1 ratio.
There are also Avios earning options with various travel partners, like Budget rental cars.
The program additionally allows you to earn Avios through regular earning promotions, that give you bonus Avios if you stay with this or that hotel, or if you complete this or that challenge (like downloading an airline app, etc.).
Iberia Plus Program Benefits
There are three different Iberia Plus levels, Silver, Gold and Platinum. What do you get with each?
With the Silver status, you’ll receive:
- 25 percent more bonus Avios when you fly
- Business class check-in experiences
- Increased baggage allowances
- oneworld Ruby status
- Priority boarding
Gold status gives you all of the above, plus:
- Fast-track VIP access
- VIP lounge access
- Double Avios when you fly
- VIP parking
- oneworld Sapphire status
Then, Platinum status gives you all of the above, plus:
- Two complimentary upgrades per year
- An instant Avios advance when needed
- Airport limo transfers
- oneworld Emerald status
How to Redeem Your Avios
Iberia Plus uses a distance-based award chart. If you’re comparing how Avios costs for flights stand up to British Airways Avios costs for flights, you’ll find that sometimes Iberia’s flights cost more Avios, but it does even out due to British Airways’ high surcharges.
You can also redeem Avios on oneworld airlines.
Iberia frequently offers 50-percent-off award flights and this is where you’ll get the best value for your Avios. Unfortunately, they’re not always available when and where you want.
Award tickets are valid for one year.
In addition to redeeming your Avios for flights, you can also use them for upgrades (however, upgrades are not available online, you do have to call).
Avios expire in 36 months if there is no account activity.
Iberia Plus is a loyalty program worth looking into. You can find discounted off-peak award flights and fuel surcharges are cheaper than some of the competitors. There are also good rates on short-haul flights, due to the distance-based awards chart, and direct point transfers from Chase Ultimate Rewards makes it even easier to earn your Avios.
