India’s largest airline has strengthened its partnership with Turkish Airlines by inking a new codeshare agreement allowing IndiGo to sell connecting itineraries all the way to the United States of America. IndiGo has been steadily growing the scope of its partnership with the Turkish flag carrier and this latest announcement is a major step forward.

Thanks to this codeshare, passengers from India will soon be able to book itineraries to four major US airports with IndiGo. This will also be the first time the low-cost carrier will spread its wings across the Atlantic. IndiGo already offered access to 33 European destinations as part of a previous codeshare with Turkish Airlines.

Mr. Vinay Malhotra, Head of Global Sales, IndiGo, said,

"We are thrilled to expand our codeshare partnership with Turkish Airlines, for the first time across the Atlantic to the United States of America. New York, Boston, Chicago, and Washington are renowned for their cultural significance, iconic landmarks, and vibrant lifestyles. By offering seamless travel experiences at affordable fares, we aim to create more opportunities for Indian travelers to discover and connect with these exceptional destinations,"

"These connections will not only support the burgeoning trade and commerce between the countries, but also offer increased options to students & tourists alike. This expansion reinforces our vision to strengthen international reach while offering on-time performance, and hassle-free service across our unparalleled network."

4 US destinations

IndiGo passengers can fly to four destinations in the US: New York, Boston, Chicago, and Washington. The codeshare comes into effect from June 15, 2023, and offers a cheaper gateway into the US for Indian passengers. Naturally, flights will be operated via Turkish Airlines’ hub in Istanbul Airport (IST)

We took a one-way itinerary from Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) to Boston Logan International Airport (BOS). On the IndiGo website, this journey costs ₹45,875 ($556) on June 15, 2023. On the same day, prices on the Turkish Airlines portal start at ₹99,570 ($1208) with similar arrival and departure times.

A lot of students travel between India and the US each year and IndiGo’s codeshare launch comes in at perfect timing. Indian students heading to the US for the fall intake often have to pay for expensive tickets with major carriers on this route like Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Air France-KLM only to get a favorable itinerary. IndiGo’s entry into this segment should provide a host of other options and allow those from tier 2 and tier 3 Indian cities to travel hassle-free on a single booking.

IndiGo and Turkish Airlines’ growing partnership

It is no secret that Turkish Airlines is a major international partner for IndiGo. Both airlines have been cooperating for years. IndiGo already offers access to 33 destinations in Europe and the United Kingdom as part of a previous codeshare agreement with Turkish Airlines.

More recently, the partnership reached new heights as IndiGo took two widebodies on wet lease from Turkish Airlines to operate flights to and from Istanbul from Mumbai and Delhi.
