The American Express Business Platinum card comes with a pretty hefty annual fee — $450. You’re probably already thinking, when there are so many other cards with no fee at all, why would I pay $450 for this one? Well, there are a few reasons you might want to at least consider it.
The Welcome Offer
Firstly, there’s the welcome bonus, which, if you can snag the full amount, automatically outweighs the fee by quite a bit. You receive 75,000 Membership Rewards points after spending $20,000 in the first three months. Those points are worth just about $1,500. Whether or not this makes the annual fee worth it to you specifically, though, depends on if you think you can spend $20,000 in three months.
The Biz Travel Benefits
It’s no secret that this card is perfect for business travelers. Here’s what you get:
- Access to American Express Centurion Lounges (honestly some of the best airport lounges out there)
- Priority Pass Select lounge membership
- Delta Sky Club lounge access (when flying on Delta)
- A $200 annual airline credit toward things like baggage fees and in-flight purchases
- Global Entry or TSA PreCheck
- Car rental elite status at Avis, Hertz and National
- Complimentary WiFi via Boingo
If you dream of traveling in high luxury, shell out the $450 for the card’s annual fee and you’ll easily get your money’s worth when you start visiting all these lounges and taking advantage of the other business travel perks.
General Travel Perks
Okay, while all of the above can come in handy when you’re traveling for leisure, it’s more likely you’ll use those perks when traveling for business. However, there are even more additional travel perks that come into play if you’re on vacation.
For example, cardholders receive access to the Fine Hotels and Resorts program from American Express, which gives you daily breakfast for two, room upgrades, late check-out, early check-in, complementary WiFi and usually some sort of resort credit.
Additionally, cardholders receive access to the International Airline Program by American Express, where you get discounts on airfare (around 10 percent off).
So, is it worth it?
The American Express Business Platinum certainly has its perks and it retains its value…but you have to use the perks to make the annual fee worth it. If you’re not going to, then this card may not be for you. However, if you find yourself on the road more often than not, the AmEx Business Platinum will seriously upgrade your experience.
