ITA Airways is ready to launch its new route between Rome Fiumicino International (FCO) and Washington Dulles International (IAD), employing its newest aircraft type, the Airbus A330neo.

The new route to Washington inaugurates ITA Airways’ expansion of its intercontinental network for the summer 2023 season. This expansion is supported by the introduction of the new A330neo, which will make its first commercial flight on Friday.

ITA Airways will operate five weekly flights to Washington on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. With the launch of this new route, the Italian flag carrier will now offer 54 weekly flights to the United States. During the high season, from August 1 to October 28, ITA Airways will operate daily to Washington. About the United States, the company said the following in a statement,

“The United States is the first international market for ITA Airways and the most strategic one after Italy, as well as the country with the highest number of citizens of Italian origins. Therefore, direct flights from North America to Italy are not only itineraries for leisure and business travel but also a means of reaching out to and connecting with the broader Italian community in the US.”

ITA Airway’s connectivity in the United States

According to data from Cirium, ITA Airways currently operates 54 weekly flights to the United States, offering 14,789 seats. The company has six routes, five departing from Rome and one from Milan Malpensa International (MXP).

ITA Airways flies three times daily between Rome and New York John F. Kennedy (JFK). It flies once daily in routes from Rome to Boston (BOS), Los Angeles (LAX), and Miami and from Milan to New York. ITA Airways will begin flying to San Francisco (SFO) in July.

In the Americas, ITA Airways also flies to Brazil and Argentina, following the footsteps of Alitalia, the former flag carrier. ITA Airways operates one daily service to São Paulo Guarulhos (GRU) and one to Buenos Aires Ezeiza International (EZE). It will launch flights to Rio de Janeiro (GIG) in October. Other non-European destinations currently served by ITA are Algiers (ALG), Cairo (CAI), Delhi (DEL), Tokyo Haneda (HND), Tel Aviv (TLV), and Tunis (TUN).

ITA Airways' expansion on long-haul routes is one of the key pillars of the flag carrier's strategy since it drives profitability while simultaneously increasing short-haul operations, contributing to doubling the capacity of ITA’s intercontinental network.

The A330neo of ITA Airways was dedicated to Gelindo Bordin, a former Italian athlete known for winning the marathon race at the 1988 Olympic Games. It was configured specifically for the Italian carrier, with the Airspace cabin, interiors designed by Walter De Silva, the latest generation IFE system, onboard menus signed by the chef Gian Piero Vivalda, and cabin crew uniforms created with the advice of Brunello Cucinelli.
