JetBlue Doubles Flights From JFK To London Heathrow

The low-cost carrier is increasing flights between the two major hubs.

JetBlue will be doubling its frequency of flights between John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and London Heathrow Airport (LHR), according to a statement by the low-cost carrier on Thursday. The announcement comes as the airline looks to increase its connectivity to Europe and capitalize on a reinvigorated demand for travel.

According to the statement, JetBlue will be adding a second daily flight between JFK and LHR to its flight catalog at the end of this month. The outbound flight from JFK with flight number B61107 will depart at 8:30 am Eastern Time and arrive at 8:45 pm British Time, while the inbound flight from LHR with flight number B62220 will depart at 8:25 am British Time and arrive at 11:40 am Eastern Time. For comparison, the existing outbound flight from JFK with flight number B67 departs at 10:20 pm Eastern Time and arrives at 9:30 am Greenwich Time, while the existing inbound flight from LHR with flight number B620 departs at 12:20 pm Greenwich Time and arrives at 4:49 pm Eastern Time. Travelers looking to fly on the route will therefore have their choice of a daytime or overnight flight.

All flights on the route will continue to be served by the Airbus A321LR, which seats 138 passengers in a 3-3 configuration. As of the time of writing of this article, there are six A321LRs in JetBlue's fleet, with two more on the way. The airline also has 13 A321neoXLRs on order.

As the frequency of flights from JFK to Heathrow increases, the frequency of flights to London Gatwick Airport (LGW) will decrease from two times per day to once a day. In addition, JetBlue is expected to begin flights on a new route between JFK and Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) in June. There is also a Paris-Boston route in the works, but it is unclear at this time when flights on that route will commence.

Reinvigorated demand for travel

JetBlue's decision to increase its frequency of flights between JFK and LHR is ultimately a tactical play aimed at giving it an edge over other transatlantic competitors like British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, American Airlines, and Delta. In addition, the move is reflective of a larger trend: namely, that airlines are expanding their offerings to accommodate the fact that demand for travel is finally returning to normal after three tumultuous pandemic years. With the addition of a second daily flight, the carrier will be responsible for 5% of the capacity of the London-New York market (up from the 2% that it currently controls). And as more and more people look to travel the route in the upcoming months, JetBlue will be perfectly poised to profit.
