Yesterday, LATAM Airlines Group revealed its new onboard safety video, in an effort to both communicate its passengers the most important safety measures and promote some of South America’s most touristic places. The carrier flew to different locations such as San Pedro de Atacama, and the Galápagos Islands to record the video.

New security video

LATAM’s new security video was directed by Nicolás Ureta and has a length of five minutes and 43 seconds. Approximately 60 employees from the airline were involved in the recording, which took 25 days in all.

The video invites passengers to have a borderless journey across five South American countries, as it visits San Pedro de Atacama (Chile), Cusco (Peru), Cartagena de Indias (Colombia), the Galápagos Islands (Ecuador), and Rio Grande do Norte (Brazil). These five destinations are among the region's top geographic and cultural icons.

This is the first time LATAM delivers a security video recorded outside a conventional studio.

Currently, LATAM is showcasing this new security video only on certain international trips, although it is also available on YouTube. The passengers flying onboard LATAM’s Boeing 787 fleet have been the first to see LATAM’s new video. Later this month it will also be available in flights operated onboard Boeing 777 and 767 aircraft, the airline said in a statement.

Promoting the region

LATAM Airlines Group is South America’s largest airline, with approximately 300 aircraft. It operates flights throughout the region, flying from Punta Arenas, in the Southern tip of Chile to New York’s JFK.

By launching this new video, LATAM is also promoting tourism across South America.

Amira Ayoub, LATAM Brazil’s Marketing Manager said,

“Brazil is extremely well represented, and we managed to introduce all the safety instructions in an appealing and creative way. Additionally, we used some of South America’s most fascinating scenarios, and we included LATAM employees in the video; they represent our brand every day and are the support and safety providers for our clients.”

Taking care of the environment is also one of LATAM’s main objectives; therefore, the airline decided to neutralize 100% of the CO2 emitted while creating the new safety video. LATAM compensated 73 tons of CO2 by supporting the CO2BIO Project, which is helping preserve the rainforest in the Colombian region, Orinoquia.

LATAM in 2022

In February 2022, LATAM is offering 31,795 flights, according to data provided by Cirium. The airline has 5.7 million seats available this month. Both numbers are 26.3% and 27.0% below its pre-pandemic traffic levels.

LATAM is still in a Chapter 11 bankruptcy process, although it is currently looking to obtain approval from the Court of its Plan; after that, the airline will look for its creditors to approve the Plan and, after that, it could exit the proceedings. It is expected LATAM could completely exit Chapter 11 by the third quarter.

In terms of passenger numbers, LATAM hasn’t fully disclosed the number of travelers it had in 2021. Nonetheless, we have the data from Brazil, Chile, and Colombia, LATAM’s three leading markets.

In Brazil, LATAM carried 20.5 million people, recovering 55.3% of its pre-pandemic traffic levels; in Chile, the airline had 6.3 million travelers, recovering 38.15% of 2019 traffic trends, and, in Colombia, the airline carried 5.8 million passengers, growing by 3.2% compared to 2019.
