In an unusual move, British Airways has announced that is opening 50,000 business class award spaces. This is a pretty generous move by BA which has historically been a little mean with business class award space. To take advantage of this award bonanza you need to make your booking by December 2, 2018, and the award space is available for flights between December 16, 2018, and March 31, 2019.
- Awards must be booked by December 2, 2018
- Travel Window for the awards is December 16, 2018, and March 31, 2019
Remember even though BA has released a ton of award space, with some great options on popular routes, it might not be the best use of your points especially if you are transferring American Express Membership Rewards. The award space still comes with BA’s dreaded fuel surcharges. So if you are transferring points, you may want to check out awards with lower surcharges.
Finding BA Awards
Finding BA awards can be a hassle, and may take some time while you troll through the various dates. Another level of complexity is added when you factor in the BA has both peak and off-peak awards.
A great option is to use a site like baredemptionfinder.com. Simply enter your desired route, and cabin class and the site will find you all the dates with award space available over the next 355 days. The results will show peak awards in dark blue, and off-peak fares in light blue.
Boosting Your Avios
If you don’t quite have enough Avios for your desired award, there is a couple of options. First, you can boost your balance by transferring American Express Membership Rewards over to British Airways.
Second, you can earn Avios for everyday spending with the British Airways Visa Signature® Credit Card; the card comes with a wide array of benefits and perks, including an impressive signup bonus of 100,000 Avios. The bonus is tiered, and you will receive 50,000 Avios for spending $3,000 in the first 3 months of card membership, plus 25,000 more bonus Avios after you spend $10,000 on purchases within the first year, plus an additional 25,000 bonus Avios after you spend $20,000 on purchases within the first year. The card carries a $95 annual fee.
If you have a ton of Avios ready to go and have some trips coming up with BA, then this might be the right time to firm up that plans and make a booking. Even though 50,000 seats is a huge number, it is still limited, and awards on the best routes will get snapped up relatively quickly.
