Lufthansa has announced that it will launch a new long-haul service on its Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. The plane, which commenced its route between Frankfurt and Newark in early December 2022, will add another long-haul destination between Frankfurt and Detroit.

The second long-haul destination

Since early December, Lufthansa's Boeing 787 Dreamliner has been busy serving its first long-haul route between Frankfurt Airport (FRA) and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR).

Now, the airline is ramping up its Boeing 787 Dreamliner service by introducing a second long-haul destination. As of February 13, 2023, Lufthansa will start its Boeing 787 Dreamliner operations on a second long-haul route between FRA airport and Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW) in the United States.

For the time being, the exact flight schedule for Boeing 787 operations between Frankfurt Airport (FRA) and DTW airport has yet to be announced. However, the 787 daily flights operating between Frankfurt and Newark Airport are scheduled to continue until the winter IATA schedule ends on March 25, 2023.

About Lufthansa’s Boeing 787 Dreamliners

The delivery of Lufthansa's first Boeing 787 Dreamliner at the end of August 2022 passed without fanfare. The airline did not celebrate the arrival of its first 787-9 aircraft, named "Berlin" (registration D-ABPA), beyond a couple of airport flypasts.

The German airline initially deployed its first Dreamliner on domestic and short-haul routes. This may seem unusual, yet it is a typical procedure for airlines upon receiving new widebody aircraft, as it allows pilots and cabin crew to become accustomed to the new aircraft.

Just a couple of months later, in October 2022, Lufthansa welcomed the second delivery of its growing family of Boeing 787 Dreamliners. According to ch-aviation, the airline's latest Boeing 787-9 aircraft (registration D-ABPD) is 3.4 years old and is named after its largest base, "Frankfurt Am Main."

In total, the German national airline has ordered 32 Boeing 787 Dreamliners with delivery between 2022 and 2027.

Lufthansa's Boeing 787-9s are equipped with a typical three-cabin layout, including business class, premium economy, and economy. Lufthansa's Boeing 787s can accommodate 247 people in economy class, 21 passengers in the premium economy cabin, and 26 in business class, for a maximum capacity of 294 passengers.
