Today is the palindrome and ambigram twosday (22-02-2022), and Lufthansa is celebrating it with a very own special flight between Munich and Toulouse. The German airline is operating its Flight 2222 to the delight of palindrome and avgeek fans around the world. Let’s investigate further.

Twosday’s flight

Last year, Lufthansa’s flight LH2222 from Munich to Toulouse made some headlines around the world after a Twitter user called Steven (@Airwaysfoodie) shared a video. In the video, we could hear an automated voice requesting passengers on flight two two two two, to Toulouse, to proceed to gate K1.”

One year later, Lufthansa is operating this flight again and on an even better date. Today’s date is both a palindrome and an ambigram, meaning 22-02-2022 can be read equally from left or right and up or down.

The flight is scheduled to depart from Munich at 21:15 (local time) from Terminal 2, Gate 48. If only Lufthansa had found the way to launch this flight from Gate 22 or maybe delay it a bit until 22:22! Alas!

The flight will be operated by Lufthansa CityLine onboard an Airbus A319, registration D-AILP, according to data provided by FlightRadar24.com. This aircraft is 24 years old, as it was delivered in August 1997.

The flight

Lufthansa has been operating flight LH2222 to Toulouse (don’t hate me) for a few years now. There have been some jokes regarding the funny number flight since 2014, as Simple Flying reported last year.

Prior to using the flight number in the flight to Toulouse, Lufthansa also used this flight number on other services, including Frankfurt-Bilbao, Frankfurt-Berlin, and Toulouse-Munich.

In the past, Lufthansa CityLine operated this flight using a 79-seat (11 business and 68 economy) Bombardier CRJ-900. Nonetheless, the German carrier is currently using its Airbus A319 fleet with 24 business seats and 102 in economy.

Lufthansa CityLine currently has a fleet of 52 aircraft, according to data provided by ch-aviation. The airline operates 11 Airbus A319, 30 CRJ900LR, and 11 Embraer E190, with an average age of 15 years. In the next few months, CityLine is set to receive its first Airbus A321 converted to a freighter.

Weird flight numbers

Obviously, Lufthansa’s flight LH2222 is not the only service with an odd number out there.

In the past, there was Finnair’s AY666 flight from Copenhagen (CPH) to Helsinki (HEL). Unfortunately, the Finnish carrier changed the flight number in 2017, after 11 years of operations. Nevertheless, throughout the years, Finnair’s flight AY666 to HEL was operated 21 times on Friday the 13th. Another lost flight number was Virgin Atlantic’s VS007 flight from London to Los Angeles. Now it is just VS7.

Going back to the devil, Ryanair’s flight FR666 between Dublin and Birmingham is still being operated. It is locally known as the devil’s flight. If you are feeling lucky, you could board JetBlue’s flight B6777 from Boston to Las Vegas.

Finally, American Airlines used to have a flight for Disney Pixar’s Monsters, Inc. fans. They could fly American Airlines’ AA2319 from Charlotte to Austin. The 2319 number was the coded phrase in the film for contamination incidents.
