Are you going on holiday with Lufthansa this summer? The German flag carrier is now offering passengers on its European flights the choice to pre-order fresh in-flight meals ahead of time.

Buy before you fly

From February 8, travelers will be able to pre-select and order from Lufthansa’s Onboard Delights menu up to 30 days before departure. The service will be offered on European flights over 60 minutes, making it ideal for the chronically late passenger sick of a stale airport sandwich - or anyone just looking for a quick, fresh meal in the skies.

Passengers can select from a wide array of sandwiches, salads, bowls, and cakes, including fan-favorite chicken Caesar salad, a vegetarian sweet potato sandwich, and a lemon cheesecake. The high-quality fresh foods were developed by Lufthansa in partnership with healthy lunch chain dean&david and deli experts Dallmayr.

The service is set to slash food waste and target single-use plastics, with Lufthansa touting the sustainable benefits of buying before flying,

“With the new service, Lufthansa ensures that the desired meal is available on board. At the same time, the new concept makes an important contribution to greater sustainability and to combating food waste and superfluous packaging waste by improving the ability to plan meals.”

Orders must be booked at least 36 hours before departure via the Pre-flight shop, with cashless payment accepted. Lufthansa will continue to offer its usual range of snacks and drinks onboard, with no pre-ordering required.

Next for the customer experience

Lufthansa has been significantly overhauling its passenger experience ahead of 2023. Earlier this week, Lufthansa unveiled its completely overhauled digital travel companion app, streamlining the process required to book flights, check in before travel, and even pay in-flight.

The new app, available on iOS and Google Play, also extends across Lufthansa's subsidiaries, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, and SWISS, which will all use the joint solution.

Hallo sommer!

With the tourism industry on the rebound, Lufthansa is planning for its busiest summer season since 2019. Over 200 destinations will be offered worldwide, including ten new connections from its hubs in Frankfurt (FRA) and Munich (MUC), for a total of 5,200 flights per week.

Hot new destinations include its new Boeing 787 Dreamliner transatlantic routes to Austin (AUS), Dallas (DFW), Denver (DEN), Detroit (DTW), and Montreal (YUL), which all benefit from at least three weekly frequencies.

As demand sustains, the carrier has been tentatively eyeing a summer return for its Airbus A380 fleet stored at Teruel (TEV). At least three jets will be reactivated and are likely to serve Lufthansa’s popular US routes, New York (JFK), Boston (BOS), and Los Angeles (LAX).

The first reactivated super jumbo, registered D-AIMK, departed Frankfurt for Manila (MNL) to undergo maintenance on January 29 after almost two-and-a-half years of storage. A second aircraft, D-AIMM, will also begin maintenance this weekend.

What are your thoughts on Lufthansa’s new in-flight food? Will you be flying with the carrier this year? Let us know in the comments.
