Newark Airport will be the first long-haul destination served by Lufthansa's new Boeing 787. The long-haul services will launch on December 1st, with the first short-haul commercial flights set to take place between Frankfurt and Munich tomorrow. Previously, Toronto had been penciled in as Lufthansa's first intercontinental Boeing 787 destination.
As new aircraft aren't often delivered at once, their schedule at an airline is typically built bit by bit, considering expected delivery schedules. Lufthansa is following this with its Boeing 787 rollout. Initially, flights will be focused on short-haul routes for crew training before a single long-haul route is launched.
Newark bound
Yesterday, Lufthansa revealed that Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) would be the Boeing 787's 1st intercontinental destination in its colors. The flight is yet to be placed into the Lufthansa.com schedule, though as the airline only has a single non-stop Airbus A330-300 service planned on the route that day, we can make an educated guess that this will be the one operated by the Boeing 787. (The other possible option is that Lufthansa adds a second rotation on the route). The current A330 flight is scheduled as follows,

Domestic flights until mid-January
Before British Airways returned the Airbus A380 to intercontinental service, it operated short-haul flights to Madrid and Frankfurt. It ended those when long-haul flights resumed. Lufthansa, however, seems set to continue its short-haul Boeing 787 training flights, even once the aircraft heads to the United States.

Last week the carrier extended its Frankfurt-Munich Boeing 787 schedule through January 9th. The aircraft is scheduled to operate up to three rotations on the route most days between October 19th and January 9th. By this point, the airline will likely have received its second Boeing 787-9.
Lufthansa warns,
"Aircraft on rotation for these flights can change at short notice for operational reasons depending on the day of service."
Inaugural flight tomorrow
Lufthansa will operate its inaugural Boeing 787 flight tomorrow. The first flight will fly from Frankfurt Airport to Munich Airport as LH 96, departing at 08:50. Two more rotations to Munich are planned for later in the day. Tickets for the inaugural flight are still on sale, starting at €461.71 ($452.35). The business class cabin is not available on this flight, though the later flights do have availability in this cabin.
Simple Flying will be on the inaugural flight reporting the experience for readers.
