Icelandic carrier PLAY will launch its first flight from Boston today, following a successful beginning to its US operations in April. The airline expects to carry over 1 million passengers to and from the US over the next year, with its New York and Orlando services set to launch later this summer.

PLAY prepares Boston launch

After a successful entry into the US with the inauguration of its Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) service in April, Icelandic low-cost airline PLAY is preparing to launch its second US destination - Boston Logan International Airport (BOS).

The carrier will operate its first flight - Flight OG111 - out of Boston today (May 11th) and then begin its daily service between Boston and Keflavik-Reykjavík Airport (KEF).

PLAY CEO Birgir Jónsson said,

"Around the world, tourists and vacationers are fueling an international travel comeback. As they return to the skies to reach bucket-list destinations and hidden gems across Europe, PLAY offers convenient flights from key cities in the United States. Expanding our flights from Boston today will support travelers in the local market and surrounding cities, enabling them to pay less for their flights and more on the fun activities and excursions that make the trip memorable."

The airline will host a gate ceremony at 18:00 (ET) for the inaugural service. CEO Birgir Jónsson and local officials will be in attendance to welcome the first travelers.

Flights will be operated by PLAY's A321neo fleet, offering 192 seats in an all-economy configuration.

Boston is one of eight PLAY destinations coming this May. The others are Lisbon, Stavanger, Trondheim, Malaga, Prague, Gothenburg, and Brussels. This will take PLAY's total number of destinations served to 25.

New York and Orlando coming soon

PLAY's US network is now at two destinations, with New York and Orlando on the way later this year. The carrier will begin flights from New York Stewart International Airport (SWF) on June 9th, followed by Orlando International Airport (MCO) on September 30th.

Birgir Jónsson said,

"As we continue to grow our presence in the U.S., we look forward to providing travelers with a no-frills approach to travel, where they can expect reliable yet affordable service from PLAY."

PLAY's New York service will be offered on a daily basis, while Orlando flights will be available thrice-weekly.

Simple Flying attended Play's inaugural transatlantic flight from KEF to BWI on April 20th, the first of four US routes coming this year.
