Aircraft engine maker Pratt & Whitney has confirmed this week receiving over 1,000 orders and commitments for its GTF engines so far this year. It takes total orders and commitments for the popular jet engine to over 10,000. Pratt & Whitney announced the milestone at the Farnborough Airshow this week.

Aviation Capital Group, Air Lease Corporation, Air Canada, Azorra, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue, Porter Airlines, and Qantas are among the customers signing up for the engines this year. Those engines are going onto Airbus A320neo, Airbus A220, and Embraer E-Jets E2 family aircraft. Pratt & Whitney says their GTF engine is the only geared propulsion system delivering industry-leading sustainability benefits and dependable, world-class operating costs.

"The GTF engine family reduces fuel consumption and carbon emissions by 16 to 20% and noise footprint by 75%, with NOx emissions 50% below the ICAO CAEP/6 regulation," says Pratt & Whitney on its website.

Pratt & Whitney's GTF engine finds favor at Farnborough this week

The engine manufacturer says 62 airlines worldwide have fitted their GTF engines to 1,300 planes. Those planes have flown over four million flights accruing 15 million flight hours using the engines. Pratt & Whitney boasts it doesn't matter where in the world you are; every 20 seconds, a GTF-powered plane is taking off somewhere.

"These orders demonstrate not only the strength of aviation's recovery but also the value that GTF engines deliver in industry-leading efficiency and sustainability," said Rick Deurloo, president of Commercial Engines at Pratt & Whitney.

"GTF engines will have soon saved airlines more than a billion gallons of fuel and avoided more than 10 million metric tons of greenhouse gases. This is in just seven years since entry into service. Over the life of these programs, GTF engines will save our customers billions more."

Pratt & Whitney clocked up 1,000 GTF orders and commitments this week after Air Lease Corporation picked the engines to power 80 firm A320neo family aircraft, as well as 76 firm and ten option GTF-powered A220 aircraft. It takes the total number of GTF-powered planes owned or managed by Air Lease Corporation to 275.

"Pratt & Whitney and ALC have a long, collaborative history," said Rick Deurloo, president, Commercial Engines and Chief Commercial Officer at Pratt & Whitney. "These GTF-powered aircraft will help ALC's customers lower their operating costs and environmental footprint, and we look forward to working with them for years to come."

Also, at Farnborough this week, Delta Air Lines said GTF engines would power the 12 Airbus A220-300 aircraft it signed for on Tuesday. On the same day, Canada's Porter Airlines decided to buy 20 more Embraer E195-E2 jets and picked GTF engines to power them.

Steady sales for the GTF jet engines this year

Earlier in the year, Azorra signed for 22 Airbus A220 family aircraft, including twenty A220-300s and two ACJ TwoTwenty aircraft. Azorra also signed for 20 new Embraer E2 family aircraft (with options for a further 30). Concurrently, Azorra said GTF engines would power all those planes. In February, New York-based JetBlue said it would buy 30 Airbus A220-300 planes, all powered by GTF engines. In April, Air Canada announced the selection of Pratt & Whitney GTF engines to power 30 firm and 14 purchase rights for Airbus A321XLR aircraft.

In May, aircraft leasing company Aviation Capital Group decided on GTF engines to power 20 Airbus A220 aircraft and 20 Airbus A320neo aircraft (with a further 20 options). The decision took the number of planes owned or managed by Aviation Capital Group powered by Pratt & Whitney engines to 145. Also, in May, Australian airline Qantas announced an order for 40 Airbus A220 and A320neo family aircraft, including A321XLR. All will feature Pratt & Whitney's GTF engine.

With two days of the Farnborough Airshow to go, Pratt & Whitney is in with a chance to increase further the number of orders and commitments for their GTF engines.
