Are you eagerly anticipating that all-important announcement about Qatar Airways’ 787-9 Dreamliner delivery? We are too. Yesterday (27th December 2019), four brand new 787-9 Dreamliners made their way to Doha for a Qatar Airways delivery. But when they got there, they turned around the flew back to the US.

A quick delivery turnaround

After a particularly brutal year, Boeing was quite keen to fulfill its Dreamliner order with Middle Eastern carrier Qatar Airways. The airframer wanted to ensure that it delivered some of Qatar Airways’ 787-9s by the end of the year. The airline was expecting seven aircraft before 2020. And, true to its word, Boeing delivered Qatar Airways the aircraft.

Four 787-9 Dreamliners were spotted making their way to Qatar with the remaining three expected to arrive the following day. However, upon arrival, the aircraft refueled and took off again. The four aircraft flown from Seattle to Doha on 27th December 2019 are now on their way back to the United States.

But why? Well, there’s a lot of speculation around that point. It’s thought that the aircraft did not have the proper paperwork to be registered in Qatar. That’s according to One Mile At A Time. Another source suggests that it was because Qatar Airways is not ready to fly these aircraft just yet. It believes that the aircraft flew to Qatar for registration but then returned to the U.S. for storage.

There are also theories that the delay was due to the redesigned Qsuites being incomplete. Whatever the reason, due to the extensive range of the aircraft’s journey, not to mention the expense and environmental damage, it’s likely that the aircraft was not sent back to Victorville for a simple fix.

What will happen when the aircraft reach Victorville?

The first of the four aircraft, registered A7-BHA, is leading the flying quartet back from Doha with an estimated arrival time of 08:49 PST, according to FlightRadar24. The other three aircraft are following close behind.

Despite inconsistencies about why the aircraft were returned to the U.S., what is clear is that the new state-of-the-art Qsuite that Qatar hoped to debut on the aircraft had not been fitted. Though this may not have been the reason for the initial return to Victorville, it is expected that the aircraft will undergo the necessary interior restructure before returning to Qatar Airways sometime in the new year.

Whatever the reason for the return journey, more Dreamliners are headed to Qatar Airways today.

Three more 787-9 Dreamliners

Three more 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft are currently now on their way to Qatar Airways. The first of the three aircraft – A7-BHC – is expected to arrive at 14:35 UTC in Doha. A7-BHG and A7-BHF follow closely behind. But will Qatar Airways return these aircraft for registration issues or storage?
