Rome Fiumicino will be American Airlines' second most-served European airport this summer, based on the latest Cirium data. It has increased peak season flights from New York JFK to the Italian capital to double daily. It adds to Norse Atlantic's recently announced new Rome to JFK service. American's JFK frequency increase builds on Dallas-Rome growing to twice daily, as revealed in December.
Rome becomes #2 for American
American will serve 14 European airports with its own metal this summer. They have 12,692 departing flights and just over 3.4 million departing seats (double for both ways). With nearly half of American's European capacity, London Heathrow is obviously by far the airline's top airport, as shown in the table below. It would, of course, be first even without the oneworld connection.
With nearly 10% of capacity, Rome is now second. American has grown its capacity to Italy's capital by 20% versus summer 2019, when it ranked fourth. Compared to that pre-pandemic period, Rome's climb has also been helped by a 25% decline to Paris CDG (ranked second) and a 13% drop to Madrid (ranked third). Until now, Rome had not ranked higher than third.

American to Rome
American will join ITA, Delta, United, and Norse Atlantic in flying from Rome to the US this summer. Despite American's growth, it is the third-biggest airline in the non-stop market, according to Cirium data. It has a quarter of the seats for sale. Even though American has 20% more capacity than in summer 2019, it has fallen from second place. Delta has overtaken it with three times as much percentage growth (+60%).

First time for double daily JFK
According to the US Department of Transportation, American has served Rome from JFK since 2003. In this time, it has never had double daily flights.
It comes as the airport pair rises to nine daily in the peak summer, the most yet. Aside from American, there's Delta (triple daily), ITA (triple daily), and Norse (daily). There's also United to Newark (twice daily), for a maximum of 11 daily flights from Rome to JFK/Newark.
