Demand between the US/Canada and Rome is significantly higher in the summer, meaning that airline capacity is much greater too. It is a very summer-seasonal market. Serving Italy's capital, Rome Fiumicino expects 2% more US/Canada flights than in summer 2019. With 16 routes, it has up to 29 daily departing services planned.
Rome to the US & Canada
As of December 20th, seven carriers will have nonstop flights between Rome and the US and Canada next summer. According to the latest OAG data, the flights are broken down as follows.
- Delta: 1,342 departing summer flights; up to 7 daily (25% of the market)
- American: 1,267; up to 7 daily (24%)
- ITA: 1,054; up to 5 daily (20%)
- United: 873; up to 5 daily (16%)
- Air Canada: 428; up to 3 daily (8%)
- Air Transat: 257; up to 2 daily (5%)

Note that Rome becomes American's second most-served European airport behind only Heathrow, thanks to doubling Dallas to 2 daily during the peak season.

All change
It's somewhat different from the pre-pandemic. Not surprisingly, Alitalia was number one in summer 2019, when it had 1,662 departing flights and 32% of the market. ITA remains a shadow of its predecessor.
In contrast, Delta, United, and American have all grown enormously since then, adding 70%, 46%, and 26% more services, respectively. Delta has jumped from third to first place from the launch of Boston (August 2021) and big growth from JFK in particular, while American and United retain their previous rankings.

It was also a time of Norwegian, whose long-haul existence in Rome lasted between November 2017 and March 2020. It had routes to Newark, Los Angeles, Oakland, Boston, New York JFK, and Fort Lauderdale.
